Founders Brewing Co. today announced plans to expand distribution into the four major metropolitan areas of Tennessee with a network of distributors. Beginning in April, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based brewery’s year-round and seasonal offerings will be available on draft throughout Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, with bottles arriving in subsequent shipments.
It’s an issue that a number of craft brewers have grappled with over the past year, and one that is often misunderstood: trademark ownership and infringement. According to Craig Rashkis, an attorney with Farwell Rashkis, LLP, trademarks can be “a word, phrase, design, logo, or any combination thereof that distinguishes the source of a product or goods” from another source. In beer, common trademarks include the name of the brewing company, a beer and label artwork.
New Planet Beer, a Boulder, Colo.-based producer of gluten-free craft beer, is starting to make a habit of operating with limited resources. A company of just two official employees, New Planet doesn’t own its own brewery, yet it still sells beer in 46 states and Western Canada.
