Ohio Craft Brewers Association Name New Board Members

In elections held during the first three weeks of June, the member breweries of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association (OCBA) elected six representatives to the eleven-member board of directors. Jimmy Stockwell of Little Fish Brewing in Athens – currently serving on the OCBA board – was elected vice-president. Current vice-president Lisa Wolters of Yellow Springs Brewery was not on the ballot and is stepping away from the board at the end of her term in July.

Nine months after breaking ground on a renovation of its former “Beer Hall,” Summit Brewing Co. is delighted as heck to announce the Grand Reopening of its public space — now with new furniture, new hours, a new doorway, and a new name. The Summit Ratskeller, our tribute to the warm German-style taverns loved the world over, will host a private kegger and ribbon-cutting with St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, local media, and other notable beer drinkers before opening to the public at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2018.

North Carolina’s Ironclad Brewery Launches VC Arm

Wilmington, North Carolina-based Ironclad Brewery has established a venture capital business unit in order to invest its profits into other startups. Speaking to Brewbound, CEO Ted Coughlin said Ironclad will make investments in the beer space as well as other sectors with significant growth potential. He added that Ironclad will invest its profits — which he estimates will average about $200,000 annually — in about eight startup companies a year.

People Moves: Joe Menetre Tackles Tequila; Constellation Hires CTO

Meanwhile, Constellation Brands has appointed former DHL executive Ricardo Bartra as its chief technology officer, and Sun King Brewing president Bob Whitt will step back from his day-to-day responsibilities at the end of July.

The growth and popularity of craft breweries in Texas in the last decade is nothing short of remarkable. The Texas craft sector produced 45,000 barrels in 2008. Just eight years later, this number had grown to 1.16 million barrels, ranking Texas 7th in production by state, per The Brewers Association’s 2016 analysis. Craft brew’s economic impact in Texas ranked 3rd amongst the states with $4.54 billion in sales and 8th in number of breweries operating at 201 (and probably upwards of 240 breweries today).

Against the Grain to Begin Direct-to-Consumer Keg Sales

With the passing of Kentucky House Bill 136, consumers are now able to purchase up to 31 gallons of beer directly from Kentucky microbreweries. Which means selling craft beer kegs at the source is officially legal.
