Silver City Brewery to Release Bourbon Barrel Aged Fat Scotch Ale

Bremerton, WA — Ever since it debuted back in 2000, Fat Scotch Ale has been a favorite among Silver City Brewery’s devoted fanbase. Scotch Ale, an uncommon style in the Pacific Northwest, gets its signature smokey character from the use of peated malt.

What is peated malt? While malt is being kilned, peat moss outside the kiln is gently smoked over slow burning coals allowing its vapors to drift above the malt. Peated malt is used extensively in Scotland’s finest whiskies, hence the similar flavor components found in Scotch Ale.

In addition to peated malt, rich munich malt, sweet caramelized malts, and heavily roasted black malt compose the tight symphony of monstrous flavor known as Fat Scotch Ale.

Each year, a small batch of this award-winning, mahogany-colored nectar is diverted to Silver City Brewery’s barrel-aging room. Charred oak barrels are sourced from Kentucky bourbon distilleries after they’ve fulfilled their initial purpose (proper distilleries only use each barrel once), and the Fat Scotch Ale is carefully aged over the course of a year in a climate-controlled area of the brewery.

This aging process imparts the rich, vanilla-like flavors of the oak, as well as the toasted, molasses-like qualities of the residual bourbon infused in the wood.

Available for an exceedingly limited window of time, Bourbon Barrel Aged Fat Scotch Ale will be available starting March 30th in specialty bottle shops throughout Washington State and Northern Idaho.
