Brewery Closings: Night Shift Temporarily Shutters Boston Brewpub; Karl Strauss Closes La Jolla Brewpub

Night Shift to Temporarily Close Lovejoy Pub

Night Shift Brewing Company will temporarily close its Lovejoy Wharf location in Boston. The last day, for now, is set for Saturday, January 23, and the reopen date is still to be determined.

“We are hopeful that it happens sooner than later,” the Everett, Massachusetts-based craft brewery said in an Instagram post announcing the closure. “We’d like to give an enormous thank you to our amazing Lovejoy staff, as well as everyone who has visited us over the last two years. We feel enormously grateful for your support.”

Night Shift opened the Lovejoy location, near the TD Garden Arena, in March 2019.

Night Shift’s Everett location remains open with limited indoor and patio seating.

Karl Strauss Closes La Jolla Brewpub After 25 Years

San Diego’s Karl Strauss Brewing Company has permanently closed its La Jolla brewpub location.

“Our lease has expired and the difficult decision was made not to renew it,” the company said on the brewpub’s website. “The support we’ve gotten from you during the pandemic has been incredible. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

“But don’t fret! When you’re looking to enjoy our award-winning beer and food, our Sorrento Mesa (Brewery Gardens) and 4S Ranch brewpubs are still just down the road,” the company continued. “Both of these locations are currently open for to-go orders, and we’re hopeful our outdoor patios will be back open in the upcoming weeks.”

Karl Strauss’ La Jolla location had been open for 25 years, and had its last day on January 11, according to the La Jolla Light.

The company previously closed its CityWalk brewpub at Universal Studios last fall.

“We have some bittersweet news to share – we have closed our CityWalk brewpub,” a note on the location’s website reads. “The support we’ve gotten from you during the pandemic has been incredible. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and look forward to reopening our Downtown Los Angeles brewpub soon!”

The Los Angeles brewpub is temporarily closed, as is the company’s San Diego tasting room and beer garden. Karl Strauss is offering to-go and delivery service from its downtown San Diego, Carlsbad, Temecula, Anaheim and Costa Mesa outposts.

Cape Ann Brewing Closes After 18 Years

Cape Ann Brewing has closed after 18 years, the Gloucester, Massachusetts-based craft brewery announced in a January 18 Facebook post.

“It is with much sadness that I announce the permanent closure of the Cape Ann Brewing Company,” Cape Ann owner Jeremy Goldberg wrote. “During the summer of 2002, a casual conversation spawned the, perhaps ill-thought, idea of what would become the Cape Ann Brewing Company. Since that day, we strove to create a brand and a place that would represent ‘the courage and spirit of the North Atlantic Fishing Fleet.’ We are proud of what we’ve created over the past 18 years. During this time we’ve weathered many storms, at times enjoyed smooth seas, and have always been thankful for the strong headwinds that have guided our voyage. Unfortunately, the current climate has proven to be our last sail. (Is that enough sailing cliches?)”

Goldberg thanked Cape Ann’s customers and staff.

‘I always strove to create an environment where everyone felt like family and I hope we were able to achieve that for our staff and guests alike,” he wrote. “May all your future voyages be full of good food, good beer, and good company!”

Cape Ann is holding a closing sale and mug club pickup this weekend.

Southern Craft Brewing Closes After 5 Years

Baton Rouge, Louisiana-based Southern Craft Brewing Co. announced Monday plans to shut down after five years in business.

“We simply didn’t have enough momentum going into the COVID shutdown to be able to survive the shutdown of our Tap Room,” the company said in a Facebook post.

The company thanked its customers and staff for putting “in 110% to keep the beer flowing and the glasses filled.”

“Thanks again to all our supporters and best wishes to all the LA Craft Breweries out there trying to survive these challenging times,” the company wrote.

Tivoli Cuts Staff

The ownership of Denver-based Tivoli Brewing Company laid off president Ken Hehir and “at least half of its staff, including its lead brewers, brewery director and longtime taproom manager” in late December, according to Denver alt-weekly newspaper Westword.

Tivoli sales director Heather Chantler told the outlet that the lack of in-person classes at the Auraria Higher Education Center has hurt business and the company hopes to back some of its team members in the coming months.

The daily operations of the business are now being run by Salomon Marcos Garza Jr., whose father leads GD Holdings, the real estate group that owns Tivoli.

Tivoli is currently selling beer to-go.
