Total Wine & More CEO Troy Rice has resigned from the top job at the national beverage-alcohol retailer, he announced on LinkedIn today.
“Leading Total Wine & More has been one of the greatest honors of my career and life,” Rice wrote. “I am incredibly proud of what we have built together over these past nearly eight years. This company is genuinely grounded in purpose, driven by passionate people, and committed to bringing joy to our customers.”
Rice cited “a new opportunity closer to my family” as the reason for his departure.
The chain operates nearly 300 outlets in nearly 30 states and sells beer, wine, spirits, ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails and hemp-derived, THC-infused beverages, where legal, according to its website.
Each “superstore” offers 8,000 wines “from every wine-producing region in the world,” Total Wine’s website touts.
“The typical Total Wine & More also carries more than 2,500 beers, from America’s most popular brands to hard-to-find microbrews and imports, and more than 3,000 different spirits in every style and price range,” it continued.
Rice was promoted to CEO in December 2022, his third title in the company’s c-suite after joining Total Wine nearly eight years ago, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He was hired as the company’s chief stores officer in November 2017, and became chief operations officer in April 2021. Rice’s retail-focused career includes stints at Home Depot, Toys R Us and Office Depot.
Co-owners and brothers David and Robert Trone founded Total Wine & More as a pair of wine stores in Delaware in 1991. The chain is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.
Rice did not say who would be filling the CEO position, but noted that the company would be “in excellent, capable hands with our tenured executive leadership team.”
“The future of Total Wine & More is bright, and I look forward to seeing the company continue to grow and thrive,” he added.
