Heineken USA CMO Departs for Diageo

After more than 14 years with Heineken, Nuno Teles is departing the company to become president of Diageo North America’s beer division.

Teles, who has served as Heineken USA’s chief marketing officer since 2014, will take over the Diageo role from Todd Day on March 1 and report to Diageo North America president Deirdre Mahlan.

“I am delighted Nuno is joining our business,” Mahlan said via a press release. “He has strong strategic orientation, commerciality and thought leadership. I know he will be a strong partner to me and the rest of the North America Executive in delivering our ambitions.”

According to a press release, Day will stay with the company as an advisor and as chairman of Diageo Beer Company USA.

Diageo touted Teles’ 14 years of experience in the beer industry and “strong understanding of the U.S. market, its channels, consumers and distributors.”

Meanwhile, Heineken USA announced that Jonnie Cahill, who currently serves as a senior director for low and no alcohol on Heineken’s global commerce leadership team in Amsterdam, will take over as the company’s new chief marketing officer in April. He will report to Heineken USA CEO Ronald den Elzen.

“Jonnie is an inspirational leader who brings strong strategic vision, a true passion for our business and a proven track record of delivering results,” den Elzen said via a press release. “He also has an eye for transformative innovation, which is exactly what the beer industry in the U.S. needs right now.”

In its press release, Heineken noted that its low and no alcohol brands currently represents more than 5 percent of the company’s total global volume. The company also credited Cahill with building the business unit, setting the strategic direction and focusing on innovation.

Cahill, who has more than two decades of marketing experience, joined Heineken Ireland as chief marketing officer in 2008. He later served as chief marketing officer of Heineken Russia, where the company said he “built a strong, sustainable brand portfolio, creating the key conditions for a more premium and profitable business for the operating company.”

Nuno has some fourteen years’ experience in the beer industry, starting at Scottish & Newcastle, followed by a move to Heineken in 2004 – working across numerous geographies including Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil and the US. He has a strong understanding of the US market, its channels, consumers and distributors. His early career was spent working across a number of businesses, including Unilever.

As previously announced,Tom Day, Chief Sales Officer, Diageo, will continue in his advisory role as Chairman, Diageo Beer Company, USA.

HEINEKEN USA Names Jonnie Cahill New Chief Marketing Officer

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 8, 2018 — HEINEKEN USA, today announced the appointment of Jonnie Cahill as the company’s new chief marketing officer. In April, Cahill will join the HEINEKEN USA management team and will report to chief executive officer, Ronald den Elzen.

Cahill is joining HEINEKEN USA from HEINEKEN’s global commerce leadership team in Amsterdam, where he currently serves as the global commerce senior director, low and no alcohol. HEINEKEN’s low and no alcohol portfolio now represents over 5% of our total global volume. In this role, Cahill built the business unit, set a clear strategic direction for the low and no alcohol business, and ignited its innovation agenda.

Prior to this role, he was the CMO of HEINEKEN Russia, where he built a strong, sustainable brand portfolio, creating the key conditions for a more premium and profitable business for the operating company. He also secured Heineken’s position as the most admired beer brand in the market and drove a successful innovation agenda which delivered significant incremental revenue with the launches of Krusovice, Affligem, Tiger and Gosser beer. Cahill first joined HEINEKEN in 2008 as CMO of HEINEKEN Ireland. Prior to joining HEINEKEN, Jonnie was marketing vice president at one of Ireland’s largest mobile networks, Telefonica O2.

He is also a Lifetime Fellow of the Marketing Institute of Ireland (FMII), the institute’s highest award level granted to those deemed to have made an exceptional contribution to the marketing discipline.Cahill holds a bachelor of science degree in management from Trinity College in Dublin and an advanced degree in marketing techniques from Dublin Institute of Technology. He will be relocating to the U.S. with his family in the coming weeks and will be based at our U.S. headquarters in White Plains, New York.
