Fat Head’s Portland Location to Close; New Brewery to Open in Pearl District Space

Fat Head’s Brewery will close its Portland, Oregon, brewpub in early 2018 following the termination of a licensing agreement between the Ohio-based company and its local franchisee.

“Despite the best efforts from both sides, we were unable to agree upon a vision for the future,” Fat Head’s founder Glenn Benigni said via a press release. “As a result, we’ve mutually decided to close the Fat Head’s Brewery location in Portland, pouring our last beer in early 2018.”

However, the Pearl District building where Fat Head’s had operated since November 2014 won’t be closed for long. Fat Head’s former franchisee, Tom Cook, will open Von Ebert Brewing in the same location in early 2018.

“Von Ebert Brewing is a new concept, where northwest family traditions meet bold new ideas in craft brewing,” Cook said in his own press release. “We’re excited to unveil a completely new experience for customers, blending our brewing expertise with the adventurous flavors Portland has come to love.”

Von Ebert will “specialize in hoppy craft brews” created by head brewer Eric Van Tassel, according to the release. The company has also hired Sean Burke, former head brewer of Portland’s recently shuttered The Commons Brewery.

Last year, beer sales at Fat Head’s Portland brewpub increased 30 percent to 2,082 barrels, according to data from industry trade group the Brewers Association.

According to Fat Head’s press release, all employees at the Portland brewpub will have the opportunity to retain their positions with Von Ebert.

For its part, Fat Head’s said via the release that it would “concentrate its efforts” on growing sales at its outposts in Ohio (North Olmsted and Middleburg Heights), Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh) and “neighboring states.” The company is currently in the process of building a $2.1 million, 10,000 sq. ft. brewpub in Canton, Ohio, that is expected to open in January, and it has also stated intentions to open a Charlotte, North Carolina, brewpub.

Earlier this week, Brewbound reported that Fat Head’s had inked a deal with Ohio’s Rivals Brewing Company to take over its original Middleburg Heights, Ohio, brewpub space. Rivals, which had been contract producing its beer for the last year, has signed a five-year lease on the 35,000 sq. ft. turnkey brewery where Fat Head’s has operated since 2012.

Fat Head’s will vacate the Middleburg Heights space once its new $12 million, 125,000 sq. ft. destination brewery opens next spring. The new facility, located about a mile from its current headquarters, will double Fat Head’s production capabilities and enable it to produce as much as 60,000 barrels of beer annually.

Press releases from both companies are included below.
