Boulevard Brewing’s Collaboration No. 3 Debuts Today

KANSAS CITY, MO – In recent years, American beer lovers have had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of interesting, often one-of-a-kind ales and lagers arising from the collaborative efforts of independent brewers. In 2010, Boulevard produced an Imperial Pilsner with esteemed Orval brewmaster Jean-Marie Rock, and last year brewed a “White I.P.A.” with Deschutes. This time, Boulevard has partnered with Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project to resurrect an obscure but delightful 17th century English style known as “Stingo.”

The idea to work with Pretty Things, a “gypsy brewer” from Somerville, Massachusetts, came after Boulevard employees got to know founders Dann and Martha Paquette at east coast beer festivals. Dann, who spent several years brewing in England —where he lived with the Yorkshire-born Martha —, was the one who came up with the idea for a Stingo-style ale. Boulevard brewmaster Steven Pauwels was up for the challenge. Pretty Things traveled to Boulevard in April to brew the beer.

“The Pretty Things crew brought a level of creativity and energy to this project that was infectious,” said Pauwels. “We had a great time re-inventing this deserving but nearly forgotten style, and I believe craft beer enthusiasts will enjoy the results.”

Pauwels describes Collaboration No. 3 as bold and full-bodied, with a big malty nose, hints of dark malt, chocolate, licorice, and black fruits, and just the right amount of tartness in the finish. It pairs exceptionally well with wild game, smoked meats, strong cheeses, and heavily seasoned dishes. The beer will be available in 1/6 barrel kegs and 750ml bottles with cork-and-cage finish, and is set to appear throughout Boulevard’s selling territory in August.
