An auction of the production equipment at Smuttynose Brewery’s Hampton, New Hampshire facility is set to open October 8, according to a New Mill Capital listing.
The facility was decommissioned for large scale production in January with the formation of Barrel One Collective, the New England-centric craft rollup formed through the merger of Smuttynose’s parent coming FinestKind Brewing and Harpoon’s parent company Mass. Bay Brewing.
Smuttynose’s brewhouse features 75,000 barrels of capacity, Barrel One Collective VP of marketing Rob Day told Brewbound. Included in the equipment lot are fermenters of various sizes (270-, 70- and 27-barrels), brite tanks, a 100-hectoliter four-vessel brewhouse, as well as a 72-valve can filler for 12 oz. and 16 oz. cans and other packaging accoutrement.
Production has shifted to Harpoon’s facilities in Boston and Windsor, Vermont. Smuttynose’s on-site restaurants will remain open.
“Most important is that the hospitality business continues per usual,” Day said. “This does not impact current operations.”
Once the brewing equipment is moved out, Barrel One Collective will repurpose the building in a way that has not yet been determined.
“For the building, we are now in the fun part of imagining the best way to use it,” Day said. “No concrete plans at the moment. We’re looking at lots of options.”
There are no smaller-scale brewing operations in place to produce for Smuttynose’s restaurant at present. The company is exploring replicating the system at Harpoon’s new brewery and taproom in nearby Manchester, New Hampshire. That location opened in June and features a 3.5-barrel brewhouse and 20 draft lines.
Smuttynose is one of Barrel One Collective’s 11 own-premise locations. They include five Harpoon-branded taprooms (Boston’s Seaport neighborhood, Boston Logan International Airport, a seasonal pop-up on Boston Common, Windsor, Vermont; and Manchester, New Hampshire), Long Trail Brewery Pub and Restaurant (Bridgewater Corners, Vermont), Five Boroughs Taproom (Brooklyn, New York), two Wachusett Brew Yards (Westminster and Worcester, Massachusetts) and Greater Good Imperial Brewing (Worcester, Massachusetts).
In addition to those craft breweries, Barrel One Collective also includes UFO, Otter Creek, the Shed, Catamount, Dunkin Spiked, Right Coast Spirits, Island District Cocktails, Crystal Light Vodka Refreshers and Wild AF, a non-alcoholic beer backed by Charlie Sheen.
Barrel One was the 14th largest regional craft brewery in 2024, producing a combined 125,400 barrels of beer, according to the Brewers Association (BA). The company was also the eighth largest brewing company in the Northeast.
New Hampshire had 102 craft breweries in operation in 2024, ranking eighth in breweries per capita (9.3 per 100,000 legal-drinking-age adults), according to the BA.
