US Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta to Speak at NBWA Convention and Trade Show

Alexandria, Va.  U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta will speak during the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) 80th Annual Convention and Trade Show general session on Monday, Oct. 9. The convention will take place Oct. 8 – 11, 2017, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The son of Cuban refugees and a native of Miami, Acosta is a first-generation college graduate, having earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University.

Following law school, he worked as a law clerk for Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr., at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He then worked at the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis and went on to teach at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia School of Law.

Additionally, he served on the National Labor Relations Board and was appointed Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He also served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Most recently, Acosta served as the dean of the FIU College of Law.

Acosta twice has been named one of the nation’s 50 most influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine. In 2013, the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presented him with the Chairman’s Higher Education Award in recognition of his “outstanding achievements, leadership and determination throughout a lifetime of caring and giving back to the community.”

In addition to Acosta, NBWA’s general session will feature brewery leaders João Castro Neves, North America President and CEO of Anheuser-Busch and Ronald den Elzen, CEO of HEINEKEN USA, along with Dana Perino, former White House press secretary, co-host of Fox News Channel’s The Five, and renowned sportscaster Brent Musburger. The convention will include 22 education seminars taught by the industry’s leading experts and a two-day Trade Show filled with vendors featuring innovative products and services for beer distributors.
