CPI for Beer at Home and Away Outpaces Total Alcohol

After one month on par with the increase in overall inflation, the consumer price index (CPI) for beer at home rose faster than inflation for all items year-over-year (YoY) in November 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The CPI for beer at home increased +2.7% last month, a greater increase than the CPI for all items (+2.7%) and total alcohol (+1.8%).

All bev-alc categories recorded YoY increases in CPI both at home and away, with beer posting the highest in both.

Overall alcohol away from home increased +2.7% YoY, the second-highest metric across beverage-alcohol after beer away from home, which increased 4% YoY. The CPI for spirits away from home increased +2.4%, followed by wine away from home (+1.4%).

The CPI for beer at home increased +2.6% YoY, which drove overall alcohol at home’s CPI up +1.1% YoY. Spirits at home (+0.1%) and wine at home (+0.2%) were nearly flat YoY.

The CPI for all bev-alc metrics at home in November 2024 declined month-over-month (MoM) compared to October 2024, led by wine, which declined -0.8 MoM. Wine’s MoM decline drove total bev-alc at home down -0.4% MoM. The CPI for beer at home declined -0.2% MoM, followed by spirits (-0.1%).

While price increases for alcohol at home declined compared to October 2024, the CPI for all bev-alc categories away from home increased MoM, led by total alcohol (+0.5%). Beer away from home increased +0.4% MoM in November 2024, followed by wine away from home (+0.3%) and spirits away from home (+0.3%).
