
Inflation for beer at home continued to outpace the broader beverage-alcohol category in September, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in its most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.
The CPI for beer at home increased +3.5% in September 2024 compared to September 2023, outpacing year-over-year (YoY) inflation for all items, which was +2.4% last month.
The increase in CPI in beer at home is more than double that of total alcohol away from home (+1.6%). Wine at home (+0.6%) and spirits at home (+0.1%) recorded minimal YoY increases.
Beer away from home also outpaced the category, increasing +1.7% YoY, compared to total alcohol away from home (+1.4%), spirits away from home (+1.2%) and wine away from home (+1%).
Beer at home also posted the largest month-over-month (MoM) increase in CPI at +0.3%, followed by wine at home (+0.2%), total alcohol and alcohol at home (both +0.1%). The CPI for spirits at home declined -0.4% MoM, the only metric in bev-alc to do so.
The CPI for all categories away from home were relatively flat compared to August 2024. The CPI for spirits away from home was flat, followed by total alcohol away from home and beer away from home (both +0.1%). Wine away from home recorded the largest MoM increase at +0.2%.
