Catawba Brewing Releases 2 New Small Batch Belgian-Style Ales

Morganton, NC — Catawba Brewing releases their take on the classic Belgian Dubbel. The modern version of the style traces its roots to the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle, which first released its Dubbel Bruin (Flemish translation: “double brown”) in 1926. This is the third release in Catawba’s Small Batch Abbey Series, following a well-received Belgian Quad (Dec. 2016) and Tripel (Passport Beer #5, Feb. 2017).

Catawba’s Belgian Dubbel is a mid-strength mahogany-colored ale (6.7% ABV), brewed according to traditional methods with Belgian crystal malt and candi sugar. The beer was hopped entirely with Goldings, lending balance and subtle earthiness to the toasted malt character. Flavor notes include rich toffee, raisin, and fig, with a hint of clove-like spice supplied by the Belgian abbey yeast.

Belgian Dubbel is Passport Beer #17 in Catawba’s 2017 Small Batch rewards program – available in their four tasting rooms, and in limited distribution.

AVAILABLE NOW: Also returning this week is Barrel-Aged Sour Zombie (5.5% ABV), available exclusively in Catawba’s tasting rooms. This sour version of their flagship White Zombie Belgian White Ale made a memorable debut in 2015, following the opening of their Asheville South Slope location. The latest incarnation of Sour Zombie was aged for 10 months in oak barrels with lactobacillus, lending refreshing tartness and complexity to this popular wheat beer.
