Last Call: Yuengling Talks Transition; Cantwell to Brew Again

Brewers Association Names Dick Cantwell Quality Ambassador
Elysian Brewing co-founder Dick Cantwell is going to work for the Brewers Association. Less than four months after Cantwell resigned from Anheuser-Busch InBev — the international brewing conglomerate that in January acquired the famed Seattle-based beer company he helped start – the former brewmaster will step in as the organization’s new “quality ambassador.”

Buying “The Cutting Edge”
In the last 16 months, Anheuser-Busch InBev has acquired three craft breweries in three key beer states. The question on nearly every craft brewer’s mind is “what’s the strategy?” Andy Goeler, A-B InBev’s CEO of Craft, is the man tasked with shepherding all of these newly acquired brands. Over the last four months, Brewbound has asked Goeler, on multiple occasions, to elaborate on the company’s dealings in craft.

Super Bowl Bud Ad ‘Fussed Over’ by Craft Players
Of all the made up beer recipes Anheuser-Busch InBev could have conjured up to poke fun at the craft beer movement as caricature in one of its three Super Bowl ads, it just had to be a “pumpkin peach ale” that the company greenlit.

Inside A-B InBev’s Acquisition of Elysian Brewing
Last Friday’s announcement that Anheuser-Busch InBev would acquire Seattle’s beloved Elysian Brewing caught many in the industry by surprise. How could a company that celebrated its independence with a beer carrying the tagline “corporate beer still sucks” — a name derived from as anti-as-they-come-band Nirvana — sell to the one company so many of its consumers refuse to support? That’s something that even its founder and brewer, Dick Cantwell, a stalwart member of the Brewers Association, is wondering.
