Charlotte, NC – The Unknown Brewing Company, located in Charlotte’s South End, introduces its highly anticipated beer Venture Stout, a re-release of 2014’s and 2015’s Silverback Stout. The American-style stout is now available in The Unknown’s taproom and kegs are scheduled to be released on December 26. Venture Stout will be available in 12-ounce cans in retailers starting January 2, 2017.
Now called Venture Stout, the original brew shared a name with the alpha male of the gorilla pack—the silverback—and was created as an homage to The Unknown Brewing Company’s owner, Brad Shell. However, due to a licensing issue with an entity outside of the beer industry, the brewery was forced to change the name of this seasonal favorite. While Venture Stout still boasts the same unique flavors as its predecessor, the beer’s new name is in keeping with The Unknown’s mantra of venturing out and trying new things.
Composed of seven grains and all West Coast hops, The Unknown’s Venture Stout incorporates malts responsible for its roasted taste, sprinkled with hints of chocolate. Venture Stout offers a slight piney taste with a traditional darker color and is topped with a tan, foamy head. The brew features an alcohol by volume (ABV) content of 6.8%.
“This seasonal stout is special to me, not just because it’s a fan favorite that tastes awesome, but because I look at it as ‘my’ beer,” said Brad Shell, owner of The Unknown Brewing Company. “When asked why my hair started to go grey so early, I said it was because I’m becoming what I’m meant to be: the silverback. So, it sucked when we had to change the name because we couldn’t afford to pay super-high licensing fees to an industry outsider. But it’s all good—now the name has evolved into a reflection of my life’s mission: to venture into the unknown.”
