Second Chance Beer Collaborates with Maui Brewing Company on Imperial Pilsner

SAN DIEGO — Second Chance Beer Company, a San Diego-based award-winning independent craft brewery, is marking its third year in business this month. To commemorate the three-year anniversary, Second Chance announced today it is collaborating with Maui Brewing Company, Hawaii’s largest craft brewery, to create a unique, island-inspired limited release beer. The company will celebrate the launch with a three-day event, taking place Labor Day weekend. Customers will be able to snag cans or try the beer on tap, starting on Saturday, August 18.

Second Chance Beer Company was founded in 2015 by Marty Mendiola, Curtis Hawes and Virginia Morrison. With a flagship brewery in Carmel Mountain Ranch, a beer lounge in North Park and product in over 800 San Diego County restaurants, bars and retailers, Second Chance has been committed to making premium craft beer, using real ingredients and bringing clean, balanced flavors to the table for the past three years. Second Chance’s core beers include, Luminous Blonde, Mulligan Amber, Seize the IPA, Tabula Rasa Porter, Clever Hoppy Name Pale Ale and Fool Me Twice Double IPA. In addition to making premium beer, Second Chance’s mission is rooted in charitable giving and sustainability, giving a second life and new opportunity to all that’s around it.

Founded in 2005 by San Diego-native Garrett Marrero, Maui Brewing Company is Hawaii’s largest craft brewery, brewing 100 percent in Hawaii. The two companies share a love for the planet and are both known for challenging traditional brewing expectations. Their collaboration beer is a unique Imperial Pilsner infused with Jasmine Flowers, something that neither brewery had done before.

“Collaborating with Maui Brewing for our three-year anniversary was a no-brainer,” said Marty Mendiola, Co-founder and Brewmaster at Second Chance Beer Company. “Garrett, whose mom, Anita, still lives in Poway, grew up here in San Diego and we have become good friends over the last ten years or so. As for the beer, creating an IPA or double IPA felt too routine, so we decided on a pilsner to bring out more herbal and floral flavors. Naturally, an imperial pilsner was even better, and why not enhance the floral aspects with some jasmine flowers?”

Tasting Notes

Floral noble hops, smooth pilsner malt, and light jasmine essence. It pairs well with cheesy potato latkes, beer braised bratwurst, ginger noodles, coconut, and lemongrass. 7.7% ABV 57 IBUs.

“I’ve known the Second Chance team for a good portion of my life in beer,” said Garrett Marrero, Founder and CEO of Maui Brewing Company. “We’re beyond stoked to work together in celebration of their 3rd Anniversary and look forward to raising a pint of this collaboration beer. Much love to the Maui and Second Chance teams that made my job look easy ‘brewing’ this beer!”

The beer will be available in cans and on draft exclusively at Second Chance’s Carmel Mountain Ranch and North Park locations, beginning Saturday, August 18 with widespread can and draft distribution beginning the week of August 27. The three-day celebration starts Friday, August 31 with a VIP party followed by games and special-island inspired flights open to the public on Saturday, September 1 and finishing on Sunday, September 2 with a ticketed brunch with beer pairings from a couple of local chefs.
