SAN FRANCISCO — Located in San Francisco’s historic Ghirardelli Square, San Francisco Brewing Co. is pleased to announce that it will open the doors to its highly anticipated brewery and restaurant in April. The family owned operation will be open for dinner to start, followed by lunch, brunch, and brewery tours shortly thereafter. Founder Josh Leavy, along with his wife Jennifer and brother Aaron are thrilled to be opening in one of San Francisco’s most vibrant urban destinations.

“We’re incredibly excited to finally be getting ready to open the doors to our new brewery and restaurant,” says Josh. “We hope that people will continue to enjoy the beers they’ve come to know from our taps at various restaurants and bars around the Bay Area, now with their own home and brewed onsite alongside delicious food.”

Brewing has been a part of the Leavy family for almost a century, beginning with Josh and Aaron’s great grandfather, Mr. Miguel Gonzalez, who formed the first industrial brewery, Mexicali Brewery, in Baja, California in 1923. Although Josh’s fascination with brewing beer began with his ancestors, his passion started in college after spending time at a local brewery doing research for a class project. Josh fell in love with the camaraderie that comes along with brewing. When Jennifer and Aaron joined the team, San Francisco Brewing Co. became both a family affair and a labor of love.

With the new brewery, the Leavys are excited to welcome a new member of their beer family, Head Brewmaster Justin Boehle. Boehle will help the family bring manufacturing back to the square by brewing their already popular Bay Area beers onsite in the historic Cocoa Building.

The Beer

Boehle joins the team with over a decade of experience brewing for Gordon Biersch and will maintain the high quality standards the Bay Area has come to expect from San Francisco Brewing Co. since 2012. He will continue to work hand-in-hand with Josh on small-batch experimental brewing that has brought seasonal favorites such as Sunset Saison and La Mission Mexican lager to the portfolio.

The innovative brews, meant to foster community, celebration, and local artistry, will be available from San Francisco’s first self-serve beer wall powered by Table Tap. Using prepaid RFID cards, the company’s WallTender™ self-pour technology empowers guests to sample beer by the ounce until they find their perfect pint.

The Food

The new brewery restaurant will serve San Francisco-inspired pub fare that pairs perfectly with craft beer, of course! The craveable dishes feature many shared bites such as the crispy bacon wrapped dates, zesty Tabasco onion rings, and smothered crispy chicken wings perfect for any group size. The wide variety of artisan pizzas correlate perfectly with the house-made beer. And the classic San Francisco favorites and nostalgic comfort food such as the fish and chips and signature burger are sure to make each diner feel right at home. The always fresh dishes incorporate local ingredients and purveyors where possible.

The Space

The Leavys enlisted the help of the well-known architecture and interiors firm BCV Architects, who have also designed projects such as the new Schroeder’s, the majority of Gott’s Roadside’s locations, the Ferry Building Marketplace, and Oxbow Public Market. From the beginning, BCV was inspired by the team’s mission to create delicious and easy-to-drink beer that fosters community, celebration, and local artistry. With that, BCV created a space that balances the rich history and character of Ghirardelli with colorful tile and artwork, flexible seating and game areas in the 12,000 square foot space. New materials like blackened steel, walnut, copper accents and blue concrete tile floors integrate with existing brick and Douglas fir heavy timber construction. In addition to the brewpub interior, San Francisco Brewing Co. will feature a comfortable outdoor beer garden with fire pits, and a private tasting room adjacent to the fully-functional production space.

To start, SF Brewing Co. will be open Sunday-Thursday from 4:30-10:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4:30-11:00 p.m., Lunch, Brunch and brewery tours will begin shortly thereafter in early spring 2018.
