Denver, Colo. — This Saturday, May 6th, River North Brewery will bring back two of its exotic Manhattan cocktail-barrel-aged beers, Big City Quad and Fancy Effing Stout – potentially for the last time. Drafts and bottles of both beers will be available in the brewery’s Denver taproom starting at Noon.
Formerly used to age fully blended Manhattan cocktails, these choice barrels arrive at the brewery with the essence of vermouth and aromatic bitters within their staves – in addition to a touch of whiskey, of course. But they are also increasing rare; River North will release only 75 cases of Big City Quad, and 120 cases of Fancy Effing Stout.
“These are some of our favorite barrels to work with, but they are becoming increasingly difficult to source,” Founder Matt Hess said. “I’m not sure when we will be able to brew these beers again.”
Big City Quad is a brazen take on an Abbey-style dark strong ale. Rich ruby candied Belgian malts meet oak and barrel, followed by notes of booze-soaked cherry and a pleasant lingering warmth. It’s like having a monk for a master mixologist.
On the darker side of the spectrum, Fancy Effing Stout presents strong with notes of anise and amaro, layered on dark roast malts rich with coffee and chocolate tones. This is the bottle to pull out of the cellar to impress both beer lovers and cocktail aficionados alike.
River North will offer bottles of both beers at $10 each with a half-case limit. Given their limited nature, very few may ship to Colorado stores following the taproom release.
