Gulf Stream Brewing Hires New Head Brewer

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Gulf Stream Brewing Co., South Florida’s newest 10-barrel (10BBL), 5,300 square foot craft brewery, today announces the addition of Head Brewer, Mike Demetrus who joins from M.I.A. Beer Co. in Miami. Demetrus brings twenty years of brewing experience including nine years as a professional brewer.

In his most recent experience, Demetrus served as Brewmaster at M.I.A. Beer Co. for the past five years, joining prior to its opening in Miami in 2014. Over the past five years, he was a fundamental part of the brewery’s growth including the addition of a canning line and significant distribution across Florida, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Prior to M.I.A., he was a brewer and co-owner at Finch’s Beer Company in Chicago, helping the brewery produce and distribute 10,000 barrels per year.

“We are thrilled to have Mike joining as our Head Brewer and looking forward to his insight to conceive and produce new beers that follow and challenge market trends,” said McKay Ferrell, Co-Owner of Gulf Stream Brewing. “We were impressed with his creativity, attention to detail and in-depth knowledge of brewing science to help consistently produce the highest quality beer.”

Over the past nine years, Demetrus has won over thirty awards and medals for his beer recipes in a number of prestigious competitions including, the Festival of Barrel Aged Beers (FOBAB), US Open, Best of Florida, US Beer Tasting Championship, and the Can Can Awards.

Additionally, he has been an instructor at the Master Brewer Academy for the past two years, teaching classes, focusing primarily on brewing science.

“Crafting small batch beers has always been my passion and working on a 10BBL system will allow us the freedom to create truly unique ales and lagers,” said Mike Demetrus. “As we open, we will focus on the common theme of repeatability, absurd hop additions and active culture sours.”

Gulf Stream Brewing is in the final phase of construction with plans to open the taproom in the coming month(s). The brewery and taproom will be located 1105 NE 13th St., Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33304.
