Circana: Athletic and Monster’s Craft Brands Lead Volume Gains in L4W

State of BevAlc Report: Non-Alc Gaining Share of Sip, BevAlc Losing Displays

Five of the top 25 beer vendors in Circana-tracked off-premise channels eked out both dollar sales and volume growth in the L4W (data ending April 20), according to the latest monthly report from the market research firm.

Those vendors include (in order of year-to-date dollar sales):

  • No. 7 Diageo (dollar sales +2.9%, volume +1.3%);
  • No. 11 Sierra Nevada (dollar sales +1.1%, volume +0.1%);
  • No. 12 Geloso Beverage Group (dollar sales +6.8%, volume +5.8%);
  • No. 19 Athletic Brewing (dollar sales +26.4%, volume +29.6%);
  • No. 25 CANarchy (dollar sales +9.7%, volume +18.9%).

CANarchy is the collection of craft beer brands acquired by Monster in 2022. While the portfolio has since been integrated into the Monster Brewing portfolio, Circana still separates the craft brands from Monster’s other bev-alc brands (The Beast and Nasty Beast) in scans.

No. 2 Constellation Brands (dollar sales +0.9%, volume -1%) and No. 4 Mark Anthony Brands (dollar sales +0.8%, volume -1.7%) both recorded YoY dollar sales gains, but volume losses. No. 21 Sapporo U.S.A. recorded volume gains (+2.6%), but nearly flat dollar sales (-0.1%).

Mark Anthony recorded stronger trends in c-stores, where it was one of six top 25 vendors to record dollar sales (+3.2%) and volume (+0.4%) growth.

Others include (in order of YTD c-store dollar sales):

  • No. 9 Geloso (dollar sales +5.6%, volume +4.5%);
  • No. 19 BeatBox (dollar sales +233.7%, volume +231.3%);
  • No. 20 CANarchy (dollar sales +4.2%, volume +3.6%);
  • No. 24 Artisanal Brewing Ventures (dollar sales +1.5%, volume +0.6%);
  • No. 25 Happy Dad (dollar sales +15.2%, volume +16.9%).

Five of the top 25 vendors by grocery sales recorded dollar sales and volume growth in the L4W:

  • No. 7 Diageo (dollar sales +3.9%, volume +3.7%);
  • No. 11 Sierra Nevada (dollar sales +0.6%, volume +0.1%);
  • No. 16 Sapporo (dollar sales +3.7%, volume +7.9%);
  • No. 21 CANarchy (dollar sales +17.4%, volume +35%);
