Catawba Brewing Releases Small Batch Mexican Lager

Morganton, NC — Catawba continues its Mexico-themed month with the release of a Mexican Lager (5.5% ABV). This refreshing session beer celebrates the deep-rooted European influence on Mexico’s brewing history, when German-speaking immigrants migrated west following the Mexican War of Independence. 19th century Mexico history buffs will also note the Austrian Maximilian’s cultural influence, having served as the only monarch of the Second Mexican Empire. Naturally, the first widely-produced beers from this time were similar in style to the popular Vienna Lager, the favored beer of Austria’s capital city.

Catawba’s Mexican Lager takes inspiration from this rich brewing history of our southern neighbor. Pale amber in color, this malt-forward lager has big Vienna malt character and noble hop aroma from Hallertau Mittelfrüh German hops. True to style, it finishes clean, crisp, and well-balanced. Perhaps a bit lighter than its European counterpart and endlessly drinkable, the Mexican Lager offers a subtle nod to the warm climates where it evolved.

Mexican Lager is Passport Beer #19 in Catawba’s 2017 Small Batch rewards program. Brewed in their Asheville South Slope brewhouse, the beer will be available in Catawba’s four tasting rooms, and in limited distribution.
