Castle Island Brewing Releases Geonbae Pale Ale in Support of Team USA

NORWOOD, Mass. — Like many local breweries, Castle Island Brewing Co (CIBC) has done their fair share of charity-focused beer releases. They believe that you get back what you put out into the universe, so supporting local and national causes is a deeply held value for them. So, how is this philanthropic release different from the rest? It’s the first to come off of their new 5BBL pilot brewing system and the first to be released and available for enjoyment at their new taproom! Meet Geonbae, CIBC’s pilot pale ale. The name, a Korean word for “cheers” (pronounced “GON-bay”), is a nod to the location of this year’s Games, and $1 from every pint purchased is going towards the Team USA Fund.

Why the Team USA Fund? CIBC’s President, Adam Romanow, breaks it down: “We recently learned that Team USA doesn’t receive any federal funding for participation in the Olympics, and that’s just ridiculous. These Olympians and Paralympians represent the best in athletics and the best of us, and that should be celebrated. So we decided to support these incredible athletes the best way we know – with beer.”

The blend of hops used for Geonbae are El Dorado, Simcoe, and CTZ. What’s CTZ? Well, much like the collaboration needed on a good bobsled team (insert Cool Runnings reference here), CTZ is the acronym for Columbus, Tomahawk, and Zeus hops. Again, what? These three hops were all established individually around a similar time, two share similar genetic makeup, and all three share similar flavor characteristics. Thus, CTZ is born. Expect earthy, herbal, citrus, and tropical fruit notes from this hop blend.

And, much like the bobsled race, this small batch beer will go quick once tapped on Friday, 2/9. Since their pilot system is meant as a testing ground for small scale recipes, this taproom-only release will not see distribution. Thirsty craft beer patriots can enjoy Geonbae at CIBC’s Norwood taproom while cheering on their favorite Olympians, drinking for a good cause, and chatting with their bar staff about the bargument topic of the day and why figure skating is the ultimate artistic expression. Although not officially recognized, they’re big fans of the 16oz and 32oz curls [of Geonbae]. Grab a pint or a couple of Geonbae crowlers and join CIBC in these feats of strength!
