Anchor CEO: IPA Opportunity Abounds

Truth be told, Anchor Brewing actually introduced one of the very first American IPAs, Liberty Ale, in 1975 and has been selling it ever since.

But with consumer recognition for products that more directly display IPA in their names at an all time high, Keith Greggor, Anchor’s CEO, decided that it was time to launch a product that would catch drinkers’ attention. So, this month, Anchor will unleash Anchor IPA.

“I think we have very striking packaging and we know that people shop the IPA shelves,” he said of the 6.5 percent ABV product. “They are looking for new beers and we do believe that we will create trial just by having distribution.”

Anchor has never been a company that creates a new brand just because the style is selling, but Greggor, a smooth-talking Brit who used to work for Skyy Vodka, said he could no longer ignore the opportunity to sell an IPA at large, off-premise chains like Safeway.

“Our customers were demanding it and retail is demanding this as well, which shocks me,” he said. “The real demand for IPA is off-premise. The fight for tap handles with IPA is pretty severe and there is a lot more space on the shelves than there are taps.”

The introduction of Anchor IPA is part of a focused sales effort to drive behind three core products — Anchors Steam, California Lager and Anchor IPA.

“They offer the greatest development and volume potential for us,” Greggor said.

California Lager, which was introduced last February, is already 12.5 percent of the company’s total production and its second best-selling beer. If the success of that brand is any indication, IPA could contribute significant volume growth.

Anchor hopes to grow company-wide production 25 percent in 2014, to 165,000 barrels, up from 132,570 barrels last year.

While its products are sold in all 50 states and in 20 different countries, the IPA rollout will follow a similar strategy to last year’s release of California Lager. The company plans to gauge initial consumer reaction to Anchor IPA in California, specifically in San Francisco where Greggor described the brewery as the “800-pound gorilla.”

“We are the number one tap handle in San Francisco, craft or mainstream,” he said.

After a month of trial, the company will execute a phased rollout, delivering IPA to major metro markets where “the Anchor consumer resides,” said Greggor. The first market to receive the new beer, outside of California, will be Chicago.

So even as new IPAs continue to flood retailers, Greggor believes there is still enough room on the shelves for an Anchor-branded IPA offering.

“I think IPAs are still underdeveloped dramatically even though in the last five years there has been a great movement towards them,” he said. “It is still not that mainstream yet and still has a long way to go.”

The California Gold Rush lured thousands west to “see the elephant,” a 19th-century metaphor for the hopeful but risky pursuit of happiness, adventure, and fortune. As early as 1849, India Pale Ale—prepared by British brewers for export to India by adding dry hops to barrels of hoppy ale—was also heading west, from England around the Horn to San Francisco. Thirsty ’49ers savored imported IPAs, but it wasn’t until 1975 that Anchor, America’s original craft brewery, pioneered the revival of dry-hopped handmade ales with the introduction of Anchor’s Liberty Ale┬«, the first modern American IPA brewed after Prohibition. Now, that tradition fast-forwards to an adventurous new brew: Anchor IPAÔäó. Made with 2-row barley malt and fresh whole-cone hops, its bright amber color, distinctively complex aroma, spiky bitterness, malty depth, and clean finish unite to create a uniquely flavorful, memorable, and timeless IPA.

The elephant you see on Anchor IPAÔäó was hand-drawn by Anchor label artist, James Stitt. The expression to “see the elephant” originates from a tale that predates the California Gold Rush.

There once lived a farmer who had heard of elephants but had never seen one. He longed for the day when he might catch a glimpse of this rare, exotic creature. When the circus came to town, he loaded his wagon with fresh produce and headed to the market. On the way, just as he’d hoped, he came across the circus parade, nobly led by an enormous elephant. The farmer was ecstatic, but his horses were terrified. They reared and bucked, overturning his wagon and scattering its precious contents in the road. “I don’t give a hoot,” exclaimed the farmer. “I have seen the elephant!”

The elephant became the universal symbol of the Gold Rush, as evidenced by the journals, letters, and sketchbooks of the forty-niners. Whether or not they struck it rich in the diggings, those plucky pioneers would forever treasure their California adventure as the defining moment of their lives.

To kick-off San Francisco Beer Week (February 7-16), Anchor IPAÔäó will initially be released in California throughout the month of February followed by select US market releases from March thru May. Anchor IPA will be available year-round in 6-packs, 12-packs, 22-ounce bottles, and on draught in select restaurants and bars as well as the Anchor Brewing Taproom in San Francisco.
