About National Black Brewers Day:National Black Brewers Day, first celebrated in 2022, was established to recognize the often-overlooked contributions of Black brewers throughout history. The day honors Theodore Mack, Sr., the first African American to own a nationally distributed beer brand, and his work with Peoples Beer, which opened the doors for future generations of Black brewers. The event aims to foster greater inclusion and support for Black brewery owners and those aspiring to join the craft beer industry.
Why It Matters:National Black Brewers Day is a significant moment to highlight the systemic barriers Black brewers have faced in the industry, as well as celebrate the progress being made toward a more inclusive brewing community and the growth of Black brewers. Earlier this year, the NB2A’s State of the Black Brewer report showed a production increase among Black breweries, despite the broader craft beer industry being down year over year. The NB2A’s efforts this year are designed to not only celebrate, but also provide resources and opportunities for future Black brewers.
About the National Black Brewers Association (NB2A):The NB2A is dedicated to promoting the Black brewing community through advocacy, education, and mentorship. Its mission is to increase the presence and success of Black brewers and brewery owners in the craft beer industry, fostering greater inclusion, opportunity, and cultural diversity.
