Lightweight Containers BV Pilots KeyKeg Sustainability Initiatives

DEN HELDER, Netherlands — Selling directly to clients in more than 65 countries, Lightweight Containers’ KeyKegs utilize lightweight PET recycled packaging and feature an innovative Double Wall technology to allow for protective transportation of beverage products. The lightweight keg can offer savings on the transport of up to 65% while using a Bag-in-Ball technology which allows for beverage producers, distributors, and bars to maintain a longer shelf life of the product.

While the KeyKeg Slimline consists of 30% recycled content, Lightweight Containers believes they can expand upon this, and the company is currently testing a version with a higher percentage of eco-friendly materials whereas the outer containers are made with PET plastics. Soon, the expected percentage of recycled materials for the product in its entirety will be as close to 50%.

To build upon this green solution, Lightweight Containers announced a new sustainability initiative this September—recycling used KeyKegs to manufacture new KeyKegs. With this decision, the company introduced the first one-way keg which contains materials partly made with used kegs from the same brand.

KeyKeg is currently piloting programs for this product collection. Whether through collection by beverage distributors at bars and festivals or through a partnership with UK-based recycling companies, KeyKegs are compressed with special waste containers before being transported to the special recycling lines. In February 2018, Lightweight Containers will roll out the top-performing method worldwide.

These revolutionary one-way kegs are available in 10-, 20- and 30-liter versions, making them ideal for breweries, wineries and other beverage manufacturers to package both carbonated and still beverages.
