San Carlos, Calif. — Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company announced today that it has been awarded “Business of the Year” from the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce and the City of San Carlos.

Since its founding in 2001, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company has followed a C.O.R.E. philosophy—C.O.R.E. being a “Culture Of Re-utilization Ethic.” In addition to making award-winning, sustainably handcrafted beer and root beer, the brewery has a storied history of intercepting materials destined for the local landfill and using them internally or ensuring they go to another business or group that can benefit by re-utilizing them.

Originally based in Belmont, California, the brewery relocated to the City of San Carlos in 2013. Their new site was initially the Varian Associates building (circa 1948) and most recently the home of Tesla Motor’s R&D unit.

Just as the former tenants were pioneers in their fields, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company’s renovation of the structure to accommodate the brewery and public event center showcases the progressive thinking and environmental stewardship that have been a hallmark of their business.

From re-claimed lumber to an infrastructure that boasts over 90% repurposed materials, Devil’s Canyon’s new facility is an authentic testament to their commitment to set the standard for innovative sustainability efforts.

“The ‘Business of the Year’ award recognizes an exceptional business for their contributions to the San Carlos business environment, as well as the community-at-large,” said David Bouchard, San Carlos Chamber CEO. “The award is a reflection of the hard work, dedication and foresight of everyone involved with the business.”

The brewery’s event center may have private events going on throughout the week—from weddings to executive off-sites, birthday parties to trade shows—but Fridays are reserved for the public. The “California Beer Garden” is open to the public every Friday from 4-9 pm with an average of 6 food trucks currently coordinated by Off the Grid of San Francisco.

It’s a family-friendly environment with no shortage of children and even a few dogs. On the last Friday of the month, “Beer Friday” sees the brewery staying open until 11pm and playing host to 2 live bands. Customers can fill growlers (reusable ½ USG glass bottles) with their favorite Devil’s Canyon products and stock up for the week ahead.  After emptying their growlers, customers wash them out and bring them back to the brewery for a refill—sustainable, reusable and recyclable!

Opening the brewery to the public on Fridays gives residents from every part of the social spectrum a chance to meet, talk and share ideas in a socially oriented environment. As the public becomes more educated on the brewery’s actions, support for the philosophy is nurtured with friends, family, neighbors and coworkers.

“We are thankful for the recognition of our efforts in creating and operating a sustainable business that is a hub for all members of our community,” stated Founder and CEO Chris Garrett. “We are thrilled to be in San Carlos. The residents and the city have not only embraced us but their support and generosity has impassioned us to achieve even more in the years ahead.”

A recognition gala will be held at Hotel Sofitel San Francisco Bay onJanuary 30th, for non-chamber members wishing to attend, an online RSVP form will be available online at the San Carlos Chamber of Commerce website in early January.
