Angel City Launches ‘What Would You Brew?’ Contest

Los Angeles, CA — Lemon Grass Saison. Chocolate Churro Stout. Red Velvet Cake Beer. These are just a few of the 270+ ideas that came from last year’s Angel City Brewery ‘What Would You Brew?’ contest. The winner: Mexican Cola inspired beer. This year, the brewery expects similarly clever, creative and kooky ideas for beer flavors with its second annual ‘What Would You Brew’ contest. The winner, chosen in October 2014, will have the opportunity to spend a day in the brew house brewing alongside the Angel City team, have their beer featured during LA Beer Week 2015, and receive a custom kegerator, complete with a case of pint glasses, tap handle and tin tacker sign. Ideas can be submitted here: http://angelcitybrewery.com/wwyb/. Entries will be accepted through September 30, 2014.

The idea for Mexican Cola beer came from Emily Finch, an avid home brewer, who couldn’t think of a better brew than combining the flavors of cola —a smidge spicy, caramel-y, acidic, a tad sweet and malty — with beer, to tap into her nostalgia for late night eating in LA. Her brewing experience can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CUJ29QnCs0.

As if Mexican Cola isn’t intriguing enough, Angel City will be featuring a rum barrel aged version of Emily’s beer the LA Beer Week Kick Off September 20th at Old Chinatown Plaza, as well as on tap at the Angel City Public House.

“When applying for the contest, I thought to myself, ‘What reminds me of L.A.?’ and I instantly thought of hanging out with my friends and my brothers in Downtown,” said Emily. “After a late night of pub hopping, our favorite thing to do is grab food from street vendors. And nothing tastes better with street food at 2 a.m., than a nice, cold bottle of Mexican Coca Cola. Then it hit me… Mexican cola, plus beer, equals the best idea ever.”

“The ‘What Would You Brew’ contest is a fun way to get our community involved in what we do and love,” said Dieter Foerstner, head brewer at Angel City. “We really enjoy seeing everyone’s ideas and hearing what beer styles they think truly represent LA. We had a blast brewing with Emily, and we look forward to crowning the next winner and celebrating an equally unique beer flavor idea.”

LA Beer Week was founded in 2009 by a group of beer enthusiasts and community members. Entering its sixth year in 2014, LA Beer Week will feature weeklong events at local breweries, bars, restaurants and other venues to celebrate the culture of craft beer.
