Allagash Brewing’s ‘Pick Your Own’ Sour Red Ale to be Sold Across Distribution Footprint

PORTLAND, Maine — In the past, Allagash has only been able to produce enough of Pick Your Own to sell in their tasting room. This year, Allagash is excited to bring another beer from their wild cellars to a larger audience.

Pick Your Own is a sour red ale that’s aged on a medley of Maine-grown fruit. The beer starts as a Belgian-style sour red ale and then ages for around three months on strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cherries.

PYO_Vocus.jpg“It’s an honor and a pleasure to work closely with local family farmers. Our relationships also help boost the quality of our beer,” said Jason Perkins, brewmaster at Allagash. “They let us know when their crop is at the peak of freshness, and we brew our beers accordingly. That way, we get fruit into a beer hours after it has been picked.”

The finished beer is a vibrant ruby red with an aroma of ripe berries and vanilla. As you might expect, berries fill the flavor. Pick Your Own finishes dry with notes of bread crust and a distinctly tart juiciness. Its ABV comes in at 6.4%.

The local farms that provided the fruit for the beer are as follows:

  • Strawberries and Cherries from Doles Orchard in Limington, Maine
  • Blueberries from Tavern Hill Farms in Windham, Maine
  • Raspberries from Goss Berry Farm in Mechanic Falls, Maine

The beer will be appearing soon in 375mL bottles and 5.17 gallon kegs in all Allagash Brewing Company’s areas of distribution: ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, DE, RI, NY, NJ, SC, NC, GA, CA, MD, VA, DC, Chicagoland, and Philadelphia.
