5 Elected to Brewers Association Board of Directors

The Brewers Association (BA) has announced the results of its board of directors election, which filled five seats on the trade group’s board.Joining the board to represent packaging brewers are Jason Perkins, VP of brewing operations at Portland, Maine-based Allagash Brewing; and Mitch Steele, co-founder and brewmaster of Atlanta, Georgia-based New Realm Brewing. Packaging brewers sell more than 75% of their volume off their premises.

Melissa Romano, co-founder of Reston, Virginia-based Lake Anne Brew House, will represent taproom breweries, which the BA defines as brewers who sell more than 25% of their beer onsite but do not offer food service.

Kris Spaulding, owner and president of Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Brewery Vivant; and Jason Lavery, co-founder of Erie, Pennsylvania-based Lavery Brewing; will represent pub brewers. Pub brewers offer food service and sell more than 25% of their volume onsite.

Lavery was elected to the board last year to fill a one-year vacancy, but will serve a full three-year term with this election. Perkins, Steele, Romano and Spaulding will also serve three-year terms. All five newly elected members’ terms begin February 2023.

According to BA bylaws, board members are limited to three consecutive terms, after which they must resign for one year before being considered again.

The board will convene for a meeting this week in Birmingham, Alabama, where they will discuss appointments for at-large board members. At-large board members – referred to as “non-designated directors” in the BA’s bylaws – are nominated by elected board members and must win a majority vote. They serve two-year terms, and are limited to two consecutive terms. The bylaws stipulate that the board may contain between zero and six at-large members.
