Georgian wine is having a genuine moment internationally, with critics and collectors paying closer attention to the region than ever before. Vazisubani Estate sits at the heart of that story — a Kakheti producer where 130 years of history, indigenous varieties, and MICHELIN recognition converge in a single address. For media professionals and wine writers looking to explore distinctive regional character, discovering Vazisubani Estate is the definitive place to start.

Vazisubani Estate: A Living Landmark in Kakheti

Located in Kakheti, an area widely considered Georgia’s equivalent to Bordeaux, Vazisubani Estate is situated on some of the premier terroirs in the region. The estate’s foundations date back to 1891, when it was established by Georgian nobleman and cultural innovator Sulkhan Chavchavadze. In the late 19th century, Chavchavadze turned the property into a progressive hub where the era's leading writers, artists, and creative minds gathered.

Today, that historic legacy has been elegantly transformed into an immersive enotourism destination, honored with a One MICHELIN Key distinction by the Michelin Guide for its exceptional character. The property seamlessly integrates a restored, century-old marani (wine cellar), 35 hectares of pristine vineyards, and a striking 19-room luxury boutique hotel—all nestled inside a rare, historic dendrological garden. The result is a self-contained retreat where guests can walk through the vineyards, dine on farm-to-table estate gastronomy, and taste estate-bottled wines without ever leaving the grounds.

The Wines: A Dual Philosophy

Every bottle produced at Vazisubani Estate is an exploration of Kakheti's microclimate, where high-elevation breezes from the Caucasus Mountains meet the rich, alluvial soils of the Alazani Valley. Working with five indigenous grape varieties from this terrain, the winemaking team pursues two distinct philosophies:

The Qvevri Range follows the UNESCO-recognized method Georgia gave the world: fermentation and maturation on natural lees inside giant clay vessels buried underground. White varieties — Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Khikhvi, and Kakhuri Mtsvane — emerge as complex, deeply structured amber wines; Saperavi yields an unfiltered red of immense body and serious aging potential.

The Estate Collection offers a different interpretation of the same heritage. Produced using contemporary European winemaking techniques, these wines emphasize precision and varietal character, showcasing the elegance and versatility of Georgia's indigenous grapes.

Same estate, same grapes, two entirely different conversations about what Georgian wine can be.

The Moment for Georgian Wine Is Now

Georgian wine is earning serious global attention — and the reasons are not hard to find. It is a story that starts where wine itself began, and arrives at fine wines that stand comfortably alongside Europe's best.

This July, that story reaches a wider audience than ever before, as SOMM TV releases Echoes of Wine — a documentary exploring Georgia's extraordinary winemaking heritage. Vazisubani Estate features in the film, and as interest in the region grows, journalists and editors now have a unique opportunity to get ahead of the conversation.

About Vazisubani Estate

Founded in 1891 in Georgia's Kakheti wine region, Vazisubani Estate produces 140,000 bottles annually, specializing in five indigenous grape varieties—Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Kisi, Khikhvi, and Kakhuri Mtsvane—grown across 35 hectares of estate vineyards. The estate holds a One MICHELIN Key distinction and has received medals and recognition at some of the world's most prestigious wine competitions, including the International Wine Challenge, the International Wine & Spirit Competition, Mundus Vini, the Sommeliers Choice Awards, and the Wine Tourism Awards, among others. Vazisubani Estate wines are available through leading US retailers, including Total Wine & More.
