Blanco, Texas — [January 14, 2026] — Real Ale Brewing Company is proud to announce the installation and implementation of Chart Industries' Earthly Labs CiCi® (Elm) carbon capture technology at its brewery in Blanco, becoming one of the first large-scale craft breweries in Texas to incorporate small-scale CO2 recovery into its operations. The system captures waste carbon dioxide produced during fermentation, purifies it to ISBT beverage-grade standards, and allows the brewery to reuse that CO2 to carbonate beer and support production processes. This new installation represents a major step forward in Real Ale's longstanding commitment to responsible brewing and environmental stewardship.
"We're proud to expand our sustainability program with a solution that helps us reduce our carbon footprint while ensuring our production is more efficient and more resilient," said Real Ale President Brad Farbstein. "This investment aligns with our belief that great beer and environmental responsibility go hand in hand, and it allows us to keep doing our part for Texas and the Hill Country."
"The modular CiCi (Elm) carbon capture plant was installed with the majority of equipment located in the back of the brewery, and key equipment inside, including a foam trap, buffer balloon, and manifold, that integrate directly with Real Ale's fermentation process. After capture, the purified CO2 undergoes quality testing and sensory evaluation by Real Ale's team, who report that the recovered CO2 meets or exceeds their existing quality standards for brewing and packaging."
To support performance and reliability, Real Ale is using Howden Uptime™ software, which monitors key operational indicators, tracks CO2 capture volume, and connects the brewery directly with Earthly Labs technicians for post-installation support. The installation includes precompression, chilling, purification, drying, and storage components designed specifically for small-scale brewery recovery.
Carbon capture has traditionally been used by industrial-scale beer producers, but Earthly Labs, a Chart Industries company, has pioneered accessible systems that allow small and large craft breweries to adopt this technology. Their CiCi® units, now deployed at more than 140 breweries and facilities globally, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower dependency on CO2 deliveries, and provide insulation from supply chain volatility and rising CO2 costs.
"It's a privilege to partner with Real Ale, a brewery with deep Texas roots and a long-standing commitment to doing what's right for their community and the environment," said Chart Industries' Vice President of Carbon Capture, Amy George. "By capturing and reusing their own CO2, Real Ale is strengthening their resilience against supply chain disruptions while taking meaningful steps to reduce emissions. It's the kind of leadership that helps move the craft brewing industry, and the planet, forward."
Real Ale will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026, marking the milestone with continued investment in quality, innovation, and sustainable brewing practices.
