SAN FRANCISCO — The Dogpatch neighborhood in San Francisco has always been known for it’s working class population and “maker” businesses. Over the past five years Dogpatch has become home to several breweries who have been dedicated to preserving that “maker” spirit.
San Francisco Beer Week is a celebration of everything beer in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. This year the three Dogpatch breweries; Harmonic Brewing, Triple Voodoo Brewery and Tap Room, and Magnolia Brewing have come together to create a unique series of collaboration beers representing the spirit of Dogpatch and the changing times in 2018.
Unlike other collaborations where brewers convene to develop a single recipe and brew it at one brewery we have decided on a different approach. All of the three breweries have agreed to use certain common ingredients and each brew a beer using these ingredients that represent each breweries individual style. The result is going to be three very unique beers sharing these common ingredients.
The common ingredients selected for this collaboration are freshly-kilned, floor-malted barley from our friends at Admiral Maltings in Alameda and cannabis and non-cannabis terpenes which are fragrant oils that give aromatic diversity (DISCLAIMER: terpenes used do not contain THC and have no psychoactive properties).
We chose Admiral Maltings malt because we believe in supporting local ingredients whenever possible. Admiral Maltings is the first new barley malting facility built in California in decades and sources organic and no-till barley from Northern California family farms. The malt can be traced back to the field where it was grown and helps close the circle between farmer and brewer.
We chose terpenes to reflect the changing times in California with the recent legalization of recreational marijuana. Terpenes are the fragrant oils that give cannabis and other plants their aromatic properties. Alpha Acids, the bittering compound in hops, are actually a terpenoid we thought it appropriate to use cannabis terpenes in our collaboration since they are related.
Come down to the Dogpatch on Saturday February 10th and throughout SF Beer Week to visit Harmonic, Magnolia, and Triple Voodoo Brewery and Tap Room and try each of these collaboration brews.
