How Lawson’s Stays on Brand, and Rhinegeist’s Plans Amid Hemp-Bev Prohibition
2023 was a sea-change year for several craft breweries who underwent leadership changes. Lawson’s Finest Liquids and Rhinegeist Brewery were among the companies who underwent CEO transitions that year. Lawson’s CEO Adeline Druart and Rhinegeist CEO Adam Bankovich discuss entering Year 3 of their respective tenures at the top of those companies in separate featured interviews on the latest edition of the Brewbound Podcast. In the first conversation, Druart dives into the “ongoing conversation” at the Vermont brewery of “what makes a Lawson’s Finest beer a Lawson’s Finest beer” and defines what makes a Sunshine brand.“Really for us, it’s IPAs – clear IPAs using Citra hops, and with a very bold flavor profile,” she said. “The more conversations we have like those – defining who we are, the more I’d say clear we are moving forward what’s on brand, what’s off brand.”Druart also discusses the impact of Lawson’s community giving programs, accelerating business by moving distribution to Baker Distributing in its home state, the launch of Hop Wired hazy and juicy IPA and much more. Then, Bankovich explores the anniversary of launching the Cincinnati craft brewery’s first NA beer line Ghost, with new offerings to follow. He also explains why launching Fuzzy Bones, a sparkling THC drink, has been a challenging and educational “crash course,” following Ohio’s ban on intoxicating hemp beverages.Fuzzy Bones launched in six states, with three additional states expected to follow. Rhinegeist is “trying to stay nimble with it,” as a federal ban looms in November. “I wish that our government officials could learn enough from the past to act quickly because this industry developed so quickly, seemingly out of nowhere,” he said. “We just really need a chance to not fall into the trap of Prohibition and instead write proper regulation now and in real time as consumers want these products instead of prohibiting them for years and years and years.”Bankovich also dishes on Rhinegeist’s daily hospitality efforts to make guest experiences’ special, the growth of the company’s core Truth and Cincy Light brand families and several expedited new additions: Half Truth session IPA, limited-time summer offering Cincy Light Watermelon and Sea Salt and Cincy Vodka Soda, the company’s first spirit-based offering. Before the interviews, the Brewbound team reviews that latest news, including:A recent Bump Williams Consulting report on long-tail craft brands finding success;Leadership changes at the American Cider Association; And Boston Beer’s 15% ABV Lytt beyond beer creation in glow-in-the-dark, lightbulb-shaped 6.8 oz. containers.Zoe also catches us up on the drinks scene during the Miami F1 race.

Brewbound Podcast: The Year in Booze News
A new year means it’s Brewbound’s annual roundtable conversation with our peers in beer industry journalism.
This year, the Brewbound team is joined by Kate Bernot, lead analyst for Feel Goods Insights, and David Steinman, VP and executive editor of Beer Marketer’s Insights. The discussion covers the biggest bev-alc news stories of 2025, including middle-tier consolidation, overall category health and consumer sentiment.
Although full-year scan data has yet to arrive, the beer category is poised to finish 2025 with low- to moderate-single-digit declines in dollar sales and volume, if the trends of the first 11 months hold.
“We’re looking at decline after decline after decline – it’s something like 30 million barrels down from our recent peak,” Steinman said, adding that “some of that was inflated from the pandemic gains.”
“It felt like it was going to normalize at least multiple times over, and it just keeps on declining at this rate,” he continued. “It’s hard to really put a finger on exactly one thing, but it’s easy to look at the broad-brush of impacts on the trends, and it’s just a tougher business now than it really ever has been for a consistent stretch.”
The usual suspects of health and wellness trends, Gen Zs’ alleged broad aversion to alcohol and the rise of intoxicating hemp dominate conversations elsewhere, but Bernot posited that there’s something bigger at play.
“The story that maybe went under-discussed for me last year was the broader macroeconomic factors going on in the U.S. and the pressure on the average consumer and how that fits into the choices people are making,” she said. “We hear so much about health. We hear so much about cannabis, THC, etc, competing categories.
“I just didn’t hear enough about how pressured the average U.S. consumer feels,” Bernot continued. “We’ve known for a long time that well-off Americans are carrying a lot of water for the U.S. economy, but they can’t do it forever, and especially not in general CPG. You can only go out to a restaurant so many times. You only need so many cases of beer if you’re a wealthy family.”
In addition to high-level impacts on the beer business, the conversation also explored granular topics, such as the rise of Guinness in the on-premise, seismic shifts in California distribution and Anheuser-Busch InBev’s growing strength in beyond beer.

Brewbound Podcast: Paul Weaver on Boston Beer’s Cannabis Plans
Boston Beer’s head of cannabis, Paul Weaver, discusses the Truly Hard Seltzer and Twisted Tea maker’s foray into cannabis-infused beverages in Canada. Weaver shares why tea was the perfect vehicle for a THC-infused drink, how the July launch of Teapot has gone, and how the narrative of cannabis stealing occasions from beer has changed.
“We want Teapot to be a social cannabis brand,” Weaver explained “Something you can stay engaged with your friends. You don’t have to break the rhythm.”
Weaver goes into the parallels between cannabis and tea, with different strains and teas corresponding with day parts, and how group occasions of five or more could be the brand’s “sweet spot.”
“That’s where we really have an interesting opportunity to be disruptive is the group setting where drinks are present but maybe a different vehicle,” he said.

Brewbound Podcast: What’s Big Beverage’s Plan with Bev-Alc?
Convergence is all the rage as big beverage companies (Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Monster) dive into bev-alc and lean into becoming “total beverage” producers.
Nik Modi, managing director for RBC Capital, and Marty Caballero, editor for BevNet (Brewbound’s sister publication), join the Brewbound podcast to discuss the latest beverage partnerships, what has caused the trend, and if a “complete collapse” of the lines between bev-alc and non-alc is ahead.
RBC Capital has been writing about beverage convergence since 2016, and Modi noted he was surprised the large partnerships that are occurring didn’t happen sooner. He credits part of the reason why it’s happening now to companies with large market share in their core beverage categories needing to look elsewhere for growth.
“It’s about increasing your use occasions and being more dynamic,” Caballero added.
And the blurring lines between beverage categories is just the beginning.
“If you were going to ask me what is going to happen in 2032, do I think that we’re going to see combinations of beverage and food companies? Absolutely, no question,” Modi said. “And I think cannabis potentially could bind them.”
In this episode, the Brewbound team discusses some of this year’s Super Bowl ads, their fear of robots, and Twisted Tea’s new year-round marketing strategy.
