When California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a stay-at-home order and shut down on-premise bars and restaurants to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March, 92% of San Diego-based Societe Brewing’s business was draft beer. The shutdown stopped the 1,000 tap handles pouring Societe’s beer at 700 San Diego restaurants and bars from flowing. Societe, like so many other small craft breweries, was left scrambling to figure out how to continue on.

- An independently-owned-and-operated production brewery founded by a pair of professional brewers in 2012, Societe Brewing Company produces an array of almost-exclusively draft offerings ranging from hoppy “Out West” ales, to Belgian-inspired and continental “Old World” ales and lagers, and dark “Stygian” beers. The brewery also features a 1,500-square-foot, temperature-controlled room housing used wine barrels filled with a maturing stock of “Feral” (barrel-aged sour) ales. Proud to be part of the hotbed of brewing innovation that is San Diego, California, Societe distributes its beers to finer bars and beer-centric restaurants and retailers throughout its home county. The brewery has earned medals in multiple style categories at the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup and San Diego International Beer Festival competitions (to name a few) and its multifarious portfolio of beers includes The Pupil and The Apprentice IPAs, The Coachman Really Small IPA, The Statesman Pale Ale, The Harlot Belgian-style Blonde Ale, The Heiress Czech-style Pilsner, The Pugilist Dry Stout and The Butcher Imperial Stout. Societe Brewing co-founder and CEO Douglas Constantiner discusses the San Diego craft brewery’s transformational year on the first episode of the Brewbound Podcast’s second season.
After seven years of self-distribution, Kearny Mesa-based Societe Brewing Company has partnered with Scout Distribution—a fast-growing San Diego-based distributor of craft beer, wine, hard kombucha and hard cider—to deliver its award-winning portfolio of beers throughout San Diego County.
Collaboration beers bring like-minded brewers together, but few so exactingly embody this truism as Stone Brewing’s new draft-only offering: Societe / Stone The Skedaddler IPA.
While some breweries release new beers at such a rapid pace their patrons can barely keep up, Societe Brewing Company marches to the beat of its own drummer—a much slower beat. Long-time offerings are what primarily draw fans to (and back to) the San Diego brewery, with new beers debuting one-to-four times per year, making last weekend’s debut of a whopping five new beers even more special.
In this day and age of ultra-rare beers, it’s become commonplace for consumers to encounter bottles coming in far above the price-tag of everyday ales and lagers. Some of these higher-end creations come in at $20, $30 or even a budget-breaking $40 each. Not to be outdone, the capitalist masterminds at San Diego’s Societe Brewing Company are about to release their most cost-prohibitive offering to-date: The Urchin. Aged in red-wine barrels hailing from California vintners, rested on pristine cranberries from the bogs of New England, then blended to perfection and siphoned into 500-milliliter bottles, this exquisite, extremely limited quaff can be had for a whopping $50 per bottle…or a mere $5 for those who help out needy San Diego families via Societe’s annual holiday food-drive.
Hardly a week goes by now where we aren’t receiving some kind of announcement regarding a branding update. So at the 2016 Craft Brewers Conference, held last week in Philadelphia, Brewbound asked several attendees for their thoughts on the recent uptick in craft rebrands and how companies should approach the process of updating their looks.
