Main Beverage Company reflects on resilience, roots in Owosso

OWOSSO, Mich. – Main Beverage Company marks 65 years in business this year, celebrating three generations of family leadership and a legacy rooted in mid-Michigan.

In 1961, Leonard and Barbara Maike transformed a building near the corner of Main and Gould Street in Owosso into what would become aptly known as Main Beverage Company. The beer distributor faced its first major challenge just five years later, when a fire destroyed the building in the winter of 1966. In a show of industry solidarity, fellow distributors from Flint, Lansing and Saginaw stepped in to help maintain deliveries while the company relocated to its current facility on Lansing Street.

History repeated itself in February 2011 during the beer distributor’s 50th anniversary year, when a second fire forced operations to temporarily move to Flint. The team missed just one delivery day and returned more than a year later to a fully renovated Lansing Street location.

“I’m proud of the way my parents started and led Main Beverage Company for more than 40 years, building a resilient, community-focused business that continues to thrive today,” said Keith Maike, owner of Main Beverage Company. “For 65 years, Main Beverage Company has been about relationships. Our retail partners, employees and communities have supported us through every challenge. We’re honored to carry that tradition forward, helping bring people together to share the beverages that are part of so many celebrations and everyday moments.”

Deeply embedded in the Owosso community, Main Beverage Company sponsors local events and initiatives that contribute to the area’s vitality, including the Owosso Speedway, earning the trust of retail partners across the region.

“Main Beverage has been part of the backbone of Owosso and Shiawassee County’s economy for decades, employing local residents, spending money with area businesses, and contributing to many important initiatives that build community,” said Justin Horvath, President and CEO of the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership. “We are tremendously grateful for that and look forward to their continued success.”

Today, Main Beverage Company is powered by 20 employees, operating three driver and three sales delivery routes and servicing Shiawassee County, northern Clinton County and the southwestern corner of Saginaw County. As it celebrates 65 years, the team at Main Beverage Company looks ahead to continuing its tradition of excellence while innovating for the future of beer distribution in mid-Michigan.
