PR / Westfield, MA (March 2026) – Westfield brewery Kismet Brewing has been recognized as a “green beverage producer” by the BetterBev program. The distinction was awarded by the Energy Transition Institute at UMass Amherst, which serves as one of the administrators of the BetterBev recognition program through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Pollution Prevention Program. Kismet joins a growing number of beverage producers in Massachusetts and beyond that have earned recognition for their environmentally conscious business practices. While brewing is resource-intensive by nature, there are many opportunities for most businesses to reduce their environmental impact and improve their bottom line.
Chief among Kismet’s environmental attributes is its hyper-local sales and distribution model, with two-thirds of its beer served from reusable kegs for on-premise consumption in its taproom and the rest sold on-site as cans to go. When consumers buy local, it results in fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to beer that is produced and delivered from elsewhere. That’s a big deal when you consider that studies reveal that packaging format and distribution are responsible for the most significant environmental impact in the life cycle of beer production.
For water and energy conservation, Kismet captures hot water that would otherwise drain to the sewer and reuses it in other operations such as cleaning. Another sustainability measure is its circular approach to hard-to-recycle plastic packaging. Customers are encouraged to rescue can carriers from the waste stream by bringing them to the taproom, where they can be cleaned and reused over and over.
The BetterBev program was launched to help beverage producers understand their environmental impact, increase efficiency, improve health and safety, conserve natural resources, and improve their businesses. Recognition is earned after a beverage producer’s local BetterBev administrator works with them to assess their environmental practices and impact. The process covers a range of criteria including water and energy use, waste, and even environmental culture. Learn more at betterbev.org.
