PORTLAND, MAINE — As Americans embrace bolder, more global flavors than ever before, one beer brand is leading the movement. Rupee Beer, specially brewed to pair with international cuisine and spice, is expanding its national footprint with major retail placements across the U.S. for Spring 2026.
Named Best Beer to Pair with World Food by Hop Culture Magazine, Rupee Beer got its start in 2020 in Portland, Maine, when two brothers relocated back to the U.S. and experienced firsthand the global disruption in the supply chain of international import beers, especially those from India.
For the founders, this wasn’t just a business opportunity—it was personal. As sons of pioneering Indian restaurateurs who opened three of Maine’s first Indian restaurants, they were raised in the hospitality industry. Their family legacy spans over half a century of operating Indian restaurants, beginning in the noted beer town of Cologne, Germany, continuing to London, UK—the curry capital of the world—and ultimately immigrating to the coastal New England city of Portland, Maine, in the late ’80s.
To bring their vision to life, they partnered with legendary British brewmaster Alan Pugsley, whose 40+ year career includes launching more than 100 beer brands worldwide. Together, they developed a multi-award-winning portfolio of Indian-inspired beers designed to elevate the dining experience alongside bold, spice-forward cuisines.
Today, Rupee Beer is distributed in 22 states and has built a strong following across the rapidly growing multicultural dining sector—including Indian, Japanese, Thai, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean restaurants.
As part of its Spring 2026 retail expansion, Rupee Beer is significantly increasing its presence in major grocery chains across the country. The rollout includes nearly 70 Safeway/Albertsons locations in the Pacific Northwest in Oregon, multiple Kroger stores across Texas, select Wegmans locations throughout Virginia, Washington D.C., and North Carolina, and Hannaford Supermarkets in its home state of Maine.
This strategic retail push positions Rupee Beer to meet growing multicultural consumer demand at the intersection of where craft beer meets import and global cuisine, bringing its purpose-built brews directly to a new generation of adventurous drinkers.
Rupee’s lineup, including its acclaimed Basmati Rice Lager, India Pale Ale, Mango Wheat Ale, Non-Alcoholic Beer, and Darjeeling Hard Tea, has earned widespread recognition and multiple awards since launch.
The brand is now the #1 fastest-growing Indian beer in the United States, reflecting a broader shift in how Americans eat, drink, and explore international flavors. With momentum building and distribution rapidly expanding, Rupee Beer is not just riding the wave of global cuisine, it’s helping define it.
