Pride Month officially kicked off on Sunday, June 1, 2025, marking a time of celebration, reflection, and unity for the LGBTQ+ community. As rainbow flags go up and streets fill with joy, Pride also serves as a reminder of how far the queer community has come—and how far there is still to go. Among the voices pushing for representation this year are Dyke Beer Brewery from New York and Beer is Art, a South African-based beer brand with a mission rooted in inclusion and empowerment.
In recent years, queer bars and breweries have begun to gain more visibility, and this Pride Month, their presence is stronger than ever. There’s something deeply moving about watching people unapologetically embrace who they are, and for many, sharing a beer is part of that joyful expression.
Obakeng Malope, founder of Beer is Art, travelled all the way from South Africa to New York City to collaborate with Loretta Andro Chung, founder of Dyke Beer. Their meeting symbolizes a powerful message: beer is love, beer does not discriminate, and beer fosters community.
On Saturday, May 31, Dyke Beer was officially welcomed at Red Bamboo, a beloved vegan restaurant located in the historic Greenwich Village—just half a block from Washington Square Park at 140 W 4th St, New York. Jade Wong the owner, was on hand to introduce Dyke Beer products to their customers as they prepared to usher in Pride Month.
Since opening in 2002, Red Bamboo has redefined vegan cuisine with its innovative mock meat and seafood dishes. Now, they’re adding something special to their menu: a range of Dyke Beer selections available throughout June.
Here’s what’s on tap for Pride Month:
- Tall Girl Gose Sour: A fruity, hot pink sour ale brewed with hibiscus, lingonberries, raspberries, and Himalayan pink salt. It’s pleasantly tart with a sweet, aromatic finish—perfect for summer sipping.
- Dyke Beer Saison: Brewed with New York state hops, Belgian malt, and Belgian yeast, this Saison offers balanced notes of bubble-gum and white pepper, delivering complexity and refreshment in every sip.
- Dyke Beer Mexican Lager: A crisp, refreshing lager crafted with a blend of premium pilsner malt and flaked maize, resulting in a light body and smooth mouthfeel ideal for long, sunny afternoons.
This collaboration between Beer is Art and Dyke Beer is more than just a product launch—it’s a celebration of identity, visibility, and community. During Pride Month, it’s a reminder that the places we gather and the things we share—including a cold, carefully brewed beer—can be part of something bigger: love, inclusion, and pride.
