Employees of Anheuser-Busch InBev-owned Platform Beer Company’s taproom in Columbus, Ohio, walked out en masse on Saturday, February 27, citing unsafe working conditions, according to social media posts.
“As a global pandemic ravaged the world, the country, the state and our very own city, Platform’s handling of the situation — and the praise for its employees — has been almost entirely performative,” the staff wrote in a letter that was shared online.
Modern Times has furloughed employees at five of its seven taprooms, the San Diego-headquartered brewery wrote in an email Thursday night. Three breweries in Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Brewers Collective, the craft division of the world’s largest beer manufacturer, have temporarily closed their taprooms after employees tested positive for COVID-19. Sierra Nevada plans to keep its taprooms, gift shops and brewery tours closed for the foreseeable future.

Anheuser-Busch InBev is back in the craft beer M&A game. After a two-year hiatus following the May 2017 acquisition of Wicked Weed, the world’s largest beer manufacturer announced today the acquisition of Cleveland’s Platform Beer Co., a transaction that is expected to close in the third quarter.
Anheuser-Busch InBev announced today the acquisition of fast-growing Ohio craft brewery Platform Beer Co. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. In a press release, A-B noted that Platform was “the fastest growing regional brewery in the United States in 2017.” According to data from the Brewers Association, the Cleveland craft brewery increased production from 6,500 barrels to 20,000 barrels that year.
Platform Beer Co. plans to open a brewery and tasting room in Pittsburgh and is targeting a summer 2019 opening. Pittsburgh would mark the first tasting room location that Platform would operate outside of Ohio.

You’ve probably never heard of Craftroots Brewing in Milford, Massachusetts, but it was just named the fastest growing craft brewery in America by industry trade group the Brewers Association (BA). According to Craftroots co-founder Maureen Fabry, production at the small brewery grew 1,440 percent last year, from 20 barrels in 2016 to 308 barrels in 2017.
Cleveland based Platform Beer Co. plans to open a new concept in the Over-The-Rhine District of Cincinnati, OH. Platform originally opened a Tasting Room in 2014 in the Ohio City Neighborhood of Cleveland, OH and added a second location in Downtown Columbus in 2016. Platform’s newest location will be a new concept for the 3-year-old brewery; one that marries beer, coffee and barrel aging.
Plans are in place to begin distribution of Platform’s variety of canned and kegged offerings in the New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut Markets beginning in December. Platform has tapped Sarene Craft to manage distribution efforts in all three markets.
