Dogfish Head Founder Sam Calagione

Brewbound is pleased to announce that Sam Calagione, the founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, will give the keynote address at the Dec. 5 Brewbound Session in San Diego.

Since 1995, Dogfish Head has grown from a small brewpub on the coast of Delaware into one of the country’s largest and most recognizable craft brands. Over the years, Calagione has developed a knack for innovation and creative thinking. Not content with the traditional methods of adding hops to a batch of beer, he invented his own ‘continual hopping’ process, which has given rise to the 60-minute, 90-minute, and 120-minute IPAs for which the company is best known.

Over the years, Calagione has had his own television show, authored books and expanded the Dogfish Head brand into industries like beauty, music, food, and hospitality. It’s this type of continued branding innovation that will be the focus of Calagione’s discussion in December. He’ll explain why craft brewers should continually search for unique branding opportunities and think of their companies as organizations that can transcend liquid. He will explain the specific considerations for analyzing brand extension opportunities, how he knew which marketing initiatives felt right for the Dogfish Head brand, and what types of partnerships can work for craft brewers.

Dogfish Head has also partnered with Hopunion, the only grower-owned supplier for the craft beer industry, for a pre-conference networking event at the San Diego Museum of Man. Appropriately taking place at the museum’s craft brewing exhibit, the free event is only open to Brewbound Session attendees and will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Additional details will be announced in the coming days.

The Brewbound Session, which will be held at the Paradise Point Resort & Spa, is a full-day conference for beer industry professionals. The event focuses on the strategic marketing, brand building and business development issues that most directly impact craft brewers. A variety of distribution, retail, investment and branding discussions are offered.
