ASSISTANT BREWER

The Tap Brewery | Bloomington, Indiana

Full-Time | $19–$24/hour, based on experience

MAKE GREAT BEER. LEARN THE CRAFT. OWN THE PROCESS.

The Tap Brewery is looking for an experienced, motivated Assistant Brewer to join our brewery team in Bloomington, Indiana.

We're a hands-on brewery with a small team, which means this isn't a position where you'll spend your entire day doing one piece of the process. You'll work directly alongside our Head Brewer and play an important role throughout beer production—from wort production and fermentation to cellar work, quality control, packaging, cleaning, and keeping the brewhouse running at its best.

We're looking for someone who understands that great beer starts with consistency, attention to detail, cleanliness, and respect for the process.

If you're already working in craft beer and ready for more responsibility—or you have strong brewing and cellar knowledge and want an opportunity to continue developing your craft—we want to meet you.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Brewing & Production

  • Work directly with the Head Brewer throughout the brewing and production process
  • Assist with wort production and brewhouse operations
  • Read and execute established recipes and production specifications
  • Prepare, measure, and manage brewing ingredients and raw materials
  • Operate the mill and assist with grain preparation
  • Pitch and manage yeast according to brewery standards
  • Monitor fermentation and conditioning
  • Transfer beer safely between fermentation, conditioning, and serving vessels
  • Carbonate finished beer and verify appropriate carbonation levels
  • Fill, clean, sanitize, and pressurize kegs
  • Assist with packaging and preparation of finished beer for distribution

Cellar & Quality

  • Clean and sanitize fermentation and serving vessels using CIP procedures and manual cleaning methods
  • Perform gravity, pH, diacetyl, and other routine quality checks
  • Record production and quality-control data accurately
  • Clean and sanitize brewery hoses, fittings, equipment, and production areas
  • Operate and maintain keg-washing equipment
  • Follow established SOPs to maintain consistency from batch to batch
  • Identify potential quality or production concerns and communicate them quickly

Brewery Operations

  • Assist with preventative maintenance and routine care of brewhouse and cellar equipment
  • Maintain organized storage of ingredients, chemicals, supplies, and finished products
  • Receive and properly store raw materials
  • Maintain accurate production and inventory information in brewery systems
  • Follow proper procedures for handling brewery chemicals, including caustic/alkaline cleaners, acids, and sanitizers
  • Properly use required PPE and maintain a safe, clean working environment
  • Troubleshoot equipment and production issues alongside the Head Brewer
  • Help keep the brewery organized, efficient, and ready for production

Beyond the Brewhouse

We're proud of the beer we make, and occasionally you'll help take that experience outside the brewery.

  • Represent The Tap Brewery at beer festivals, special events, and other community events
  • Assist with draft-system maintenance and brewery-related needs at designated locations
  • Support transportation and distribution of beer when needed
  • Help educate team members and guests about The Tap beers and brewing process
  • Represent The Tap Brewery professionally whenever interacting with guests, partners, or the community

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We're looking for someone who wants to build a career in brewing, not simply work around beer.

Our ideal Assistant Brewer:

  • Has previous professional brewing or cellar experience
  • Understands the brewing process from raw ingredients through finished beer
  • Takes sanitation, consistency, and quality seriously
  • Has a strong mechanical aptitude and enjoys troubleshooting
  • Can work independently without sacrificing communication or attention to detail
  • Is organized and comfortable maintaining accurate production records
  • Can follow established recipes, SOPs, and safety procedures
  • Works well in a small, collaborative brewery environment
  • Can adapt quickly when production priorities change
  • Is comfortable working occasional evenings or weekends when production or events require it
  • Has a valid driver's license

Experience with brewery production software, laboratory testing, draft systems, or equipment maintenance is a plus.

Cicerone, BJCP, brewing education, or other relevant industry certifications are welcomed but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Brewing is physical work. Candidates must be able to:

  • Stand and work on their feet for extended shifts
  • Regularly lift and move bags of grain, kegs, hoses, and brewery equipment
  • Work safely around hot liquids, pressurized vessels, chemicals, and production equipment
  • Work comfortably in wet environments and varying temperatures
  • Safely work on ladders, elevated areas, and in tight spaces when necessary
  • Perform the physical functions required throughout brewing, cellaring, cleaning, and packaging operations

WHY THE TAP BREWERY?

At The Tap, you'll have the opportunity to be directly involved in making the beer.

Our brewery operates with a small team, so you'll work side-by-side with the Head Brewer and gain hands-on experience throughout the entire production process. You'll have the opportunity to develop your skills, take ownership of your work, contribute ideas, and see the beer you helped produce served to guests across The Tap locations.

We offer:

  • $19–$24/hour, based on brewing experience and qualifications
  • Full-time employment
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for eligible employees
  • 401(k) with company match after one year
  • Dining privileges at FHG restaurant locations
  • Hands-on professional development alongside an experienced Head Brewer
  • Opportunities to expand your brewing knowledge and responsibilities
  • A collaborative environment built around craft, quality, and hospitality

If you care about craft beer, understand the work that goes into making it, and want an opportunity to have a meaningful role in a small brewery operation, we'd love to hear from you.
