Sudwerk Earns Four Medals at California State Fair

DAVIS, Calif. — Sudwerk Brewing Co. is one of the most decorated breweries at the 2014 California State Fair, earning more combined medals in lager categories than any of its competitors.

For the second year in a row, Sudwerk was among the top five breweries in the state for numbers of medals earned in the California State Fair Commercial Craft Brew Competition, announced June 23. Judges award just one gold, silver and bronze in each category.

Sudwerk earned four medals: a gold for its Märzen Amber Lager (European Amber Lager category), silver for Northern Pilsner (Pilsner), and bronzes for Ultimator Doppelbock (Bock) and 3 Best Friends (Specialty). In 2013, it won five medals: a gold for its Oatmeal Stout; silvers for Märzen and Mai Bock; and bronzes for Doppelbock and Lager.

Sudwerk Lead Brewer Mike Hutson was thrilled with the news, noting that all of the 2014 winners were brewed with lager yeast. “It’s always an honor to be recognized for our beers. This year was more competitive than ever, with nearly 1,000 entries from 139 breweries. These awards also continue strengthening our mission to redefine the American Lager.”

While the majority of California craft beers are ales, Sudwerk is one of just a handful in the state that specializes in brewing craft lagers.
