Mitch Steele’s Georgia Brewery Gets a Name

It took six months, but the name of Mitch Steele’s new Georgia brewery project has finally been revealed.

Steele, the former brewmaster for San Diego’s Stone Brewing, together with partners Carey Falcone and Bob Powers, announced Thursday that their new project would be entitled New Realm Brewing.

“We could not be more thrilled to announce our name, New Realm,” New Realm co-founder and CEO Falcone said in a press release. “It has taken us quite a bit of time (over many beers, of course) to create our vision and land on the right name for our future brewery and restaurant. New Realm speaks to our desire to create a new realm in brewing and dining experiences, and to support an outstanding and dynamic local craft beer community.”

Construction on New Realm’s 20,000 sq. ft. brewery in Atlanta’s Beltline area is slated to begin this spring with a targeted opening in early fall.

“In addition to our production brewery, we will have a restaurant, as well as both a rooftop bar and an outdoor beer garden at New Realm and we look forward to unveiling design plans in the near future,” Powers, co-founder and CCO, said in a press release.

Proposed changes to Georgia’s direct-sales laws have made New Realm’s brewery plans close to reality, Powers wrote.

“Either way, we plan to distribute off-premise in bottles, cans and kegs,” Powers wrote.

The brewery has yet to sign with a wholesale partner yet, however New Realm has begun fielding inquiries from distributors in Georgia, Powers said.

“That process has just started,” Powers wrote. “We hope to have a distributor partner on board later this summer.”

Steele, who served as brewmaster at Stone Brewing for a decade until resigning last June, is in the process of writing New Realm’s recipes. Steele, who practically wrote the book on IPAs, said he doesn’t plan to stray far from his strengths.

“Count on IPAs being poured at New Realm as well as barrel-aged beers and traditional lagers,” Steele, the new company’s brewmaster and COO, said in a press release.

Powers declined to put a figure on how much beer New Realm plans to produce in its first year.
