Role and Responsibilities
Brewer II
 
This position will report directly to the Head Brewer and will be responsible for execution of the day-to-day brewing operations to safely achieve the timely delivery of the highest quality beer to our customers.  In addition, they will represent the brewery, in a manner consistent with our core values of quality, innovation, and sustainability, at promotional and industry events as required. Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to:
  • Perform all brewing tasks, included but not limited to: milling, mashing, boiling, CIP, etc…
  • Plan Brews monthly based on direction from management and sales
  • Brew beer precisely according to the written recipe and standard procedures
  • Accurately record all aspects of the production in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements
  • Supervise others to ensure work is done accurately and in a timely fashion and provide feedback to management
  • Work independently and as a team to complete tasks quickly and accurately
  • Perform all cellaring tasks, including but not limited to packaging/racking activities, cleaning, preparing, and filling kegs, bottles/cans, labelling, accurately and promptly document activities, prepare outgoing shipments
  • Cleaning and filling kegs, including transporting kegs for cleaning
  • Racking beer between fermenters and brite tanks
  • Cleaning and sanitizing tanks and other brewery equipment
  • Yeast management, including propagation, harvesting and pitching yeast
  • Dry hopping, fining, and monitoring beer in tank by sensory evaluation and measurement
  • Producing wort
  • Working safely and efficiently
  • Maintaining safe conditions for other employees and visitors
  • Receiving and organizing shipments
  • Track ingredient usage and alert Management when levels are low/order when necessary
  • Track and manage vendor relationships and assemble orders
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and orderliness in the production area
  • Following SOPs and create new ones as well as updates to existing ones
  • Keeping accurate, timely, and legible records
  • Troubleshooting mechanical equipment to ensure safe and timely production of finished beer
  • Communicating with the head brewer to understand and fulfill responsibilities of self and team
  • Reporting safety, maintenance, or beer quality issues urgently to the head brewer
  • Representing Sketchbook Brewing Co. as a member of the beer and local communities
  • Assignment to on- and off-site consumer-facing events outside of normal working hours, e.g. trade shows and beer festivals
  • Other duties as assigned/requested

     

    Qualifications

    Hard work and the ultimate dedication to the production of the highest quality product are required to support the following:

  • Experience in a commercial brewing setting for 2 or more years
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the brewing process. Including but not limited to brewing, fermentation, conditioning, racking, and proper cleaning and handling of product, and including but not limited to water chemistry.
  • Ability to demonstrate repeatable, unsupported proficiency of complicated and sensitive tasks after training, practice, and feedback
  • Growth-oriented mindset with a willingness to openly communicate mistakes and gaps in knowledge
  • Demonstrable ability to make intelligent decisions in difficult, rapidly evolving circumstances
  • Proficiency in or willingness on to learn Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets, and brewing software and email
  • A valid and current driver's license
  • Qualified to use lift trucks safely or to become trained and qualified within 30 days of employment
  • Experience with cellaring and racking
  • Ability to maintain production equipment, mechanically inclined with a willingness to troubleshoot and fix issues
  • Acute attention to detail and high quality standards
  • Ability to learn and follow all safety standards related to equipment and chemicals
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment safely and efficiently
  • Lift and maneuver 60lb repeatedly, and be able to safely move kegs which weigh close to 165 pounds.
  • 21yrs of age or older
