JOB SUMMARY: 

The Quality Manager oversees the quality department and is responsible for protecting and improving the quality of our products.  This position reports to the Director of Brewing Operations.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Enforce routine quality hold on every batch of beer, and ensure no beer is released from quality hold without passing quality checks   

  • Serve as company-wide point of contact if any beer requires quality investigation outside the normal anticipated timeline  

  • Manage the quality team, which includes tracking time-off requests, performing regular check-ins, leading the end of year performance review, interviewing/hiring/training, and generally working to facilitate the safety and success of each individual  

  • Oversee and improve micro sampling plan and chemistry-based analytical plan    

  • Collect and review sensory information on all batches using DraughtLab  

  • Maintain and review production data for all batches  

  • Work to achieve KPI goals within the Quality Department, which includes regular tracking and review with director of brewing operations  

  • Work with quality team to maintain updated quality-specific SOPs and decision trees, and to train and re-train annually   

  • Work with head brewer to maintain beer quality standards   

  • Work with head brewer to maintain updated SOPs and decision trees for quality at the source measurements and to train and re-train operators annually   

  • Work with supply chain manager to communicate quality hold delays or product withdrawal needs  

  • Maintain complaint log and investigate complaints  

  • Maintain quality manual   

  • Centralize all production GMPs  

  • Generate quality reports as needed  

  • Work with brewing and packaging staff on process improvements where quality is impacted  

  • Participate in annual audit for traceability and product withdrawal procedure  

  • Participate in new ingredient or process approval   

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to work within and continually improve a robust safety culture while ensuring the quality team operates in a safe manner  

  • Possess communication skills necessary to manage individuals and work effectively with other departments within production and across the company  

  • Possess intimate understanding of quality-based measurements   

  • Possess understanding of all production processes at HABC  

  • Possess intimate understanding of the relationship between quality and production processes  

  • Ability to logically troubleshoot quality issues to determine root cause  

  • Ability to remain calm and provide leadership during emergency quality situations 

BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with concentration on science/biology/chemistry  

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the Quality Department of a production brewery  

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and DraughtLab  

  • Statistical analysis 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs.  

  • Must be able to maneuver 165 lb. kegs into position  

  • Must be able to navigate step stool while sampling from tanks
