Sustainability Efforts

Job Title:                             Taproom Manager

The Taproom Manager is responsible for oversight and operations of Highland’s guest experience and service staff in any of Highland’s venues which include the Taproom, Meadow, Event Center, Barrel Room, and Rooftop. The Taproom Manager also oversees service elements implemented as part of Highland’s campus amenities which include trails and volleyball courts. The Taproom Manager ensures the guest experience aligns with Highland’s brand standards creating a “not to miss” brewery destination with oversight that maintains a profitable, safe, service-oriented work environment. 

While the primary responsibility of shift leader falls to Taproom Assistant Managers, the Taproom Manager may be required to open, close, or manage a service shift.  The Taproom Manager is expected to show enthusiasm for all elements of Highland’s guest experience which may include duties comparable to a host, server, busser, bartender, or retail associate. 


  • Proactively contribute to the growth and development of Highland’s guest experience by delivering a memorable onsite experience that inspires guests to visit often, stay longer, enjoy our beer, engage with our staff and our amenities, and take our goods home
  • Collaborate with the Hospitality Director to create, update and maintain Hospitality training
  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, and training of new hires as well as ongoing staff training
  • Manage and schedule Hospitality staff, including AV and maintenance, and oversee payroll
  • Manage Taproom revenue, expenses, invoice approvals, and labor percentage to sales
  • Develop and maintain competitive, profitable pricing models for all beverages sold at Highland
  • Develop sales initiatives and upsell opportunities for team execution to ensure revenue goals are met or exceeded and guests are inspired to take Highland goods home
  • Analyze Taproom revenue and expenses to accurately report pacing to Hospitality Director
  • Ensure guest areas comply with state ABC permitting, city ordinances and/or permits, capacity restrictions and fire/life safety measures
  • Oversee music licensing agreements, fees and contracts
  • Oversee and collaborate with Taproom Assistant Managers in coordinating food trucks, updating POS items, ordering janitorial supplies, staff uniforms, and Hospitality service supplies
  • Oversee and collaborate with the Event Coordinator to curate beer releases as well as weekly and special events to that elevate our beer, showcase our amenities, and engage the community
  • Oversee and collaborate with the Merchandise Coordinator to ensure a profitable, on-brand retail store with visibility, desirable merchandise, competitive pricing, and organized inventory
  • Oversee and collaborate with the Campus Amenities Coordinator to develop profitable campus amenities and memorable tour experiences which may include paid programming/tours, a reservation system, additional beverage services, and/or membership opportunities
  • Oversee and collaborate with the Bar Operations Coordinator to manage year-round, seasonal, and small batch beer inventory, beer release schedules, wine and non-Highland beverage offerings, beverage placements at all Highland bars, clean and functional draft equipment
  • Collaborate with Marketing to promote Highland events, services, and amenities through paid advertising channels, newsletters, and social media in accordance with budget guidelines
  • Demonstrate and enforce Highland’s service standards to maintain a positive, collaborative work environment  
  • Show mastery in POS software and retail operating systems
  • Approve quarterly inventory accurately and efficiently
  • Facilitate and lead weekly manager and Hospitality lead team meetings
  • Serve as manager on duty (MOD) during public open hours, as needed, and proactively monitor daily service recognizing opportunities for the growth of Highland’s guest experience
  • Guide guests through Highland’s array of craft beer in accordance with brand standards
  • Anticipate guest needs proactively and conscientiously in a dynamic environment which may include beverage service, selling merchandise and packaged beer, moving seating arrangements, clearing and cleaning tables, serving guests at tables, and directing guests around campus
  • Perform campus tours for guests and vendors as necessary 
  • Understand and adhere to North Carolina alcohol laws and permits specific to Highland
  • Maintain knowledge of the Highland brand story, beer styles, campus amenities, family history to educate and communicate our mission and vision to guests
  • Must be self-motivated with calm demeanor under pressure
  • Perform other duties as needed and assigned



This position is 40+ hours, five days per week. Weekly schedule is standard and dictated by administrative volume, meeting schedule and service needs. Public open hours vary by season but are daily and most holidays. Ability to work nights and weekends may be required.           




  • Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Business, Tourism or comparable is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age in accordance with NC ABC laws


  • Two years of management in hospitality required and experience in a craft brewery preferred
  • Enthusiasm for craft beer and delivering an incredible guest experience is required
  • Experience working in hospitality under North Carolina COVID requirements preferred

  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications including Teams
  • Cicerone server level one certification required within one year of employment
  • Forklift driver certification required within one year of employment

Working Conditions: 

As this position is working in a brewery, the physical demands of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Bending, twisting, reaching overhead, lifting up to 30lbs frequently & up to 50lbs occasionally
  • Working with cleaning chemicals
  • Working in both indoor and outdoor service areas with inclement weather at times
