Seeking Malt Beverage Lab Manager / Scientist

Job Description: The University of the Sciences Brewing Science program is seeking qualified professionals for the position of Malt Beverage Testing Lab Manager.  The Malt Beverage Testing Lab Manager will run the day to day operation of our startup quality testing facility in support of the brewing industry.  The position requires routine sample analysis, management and delivery of testing data, development of standard operating procedures, and management of inventory / student technicians with a primary analytical eye on barley, hops, and beer. 

This is a full-time position with benefits. This position was made possible through a grant from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board for the establishment of a quality testing program to support local raw materials and malt beverages. It is a one-year contract with renewal contingent upon successful lab operations.

Specific Duties:

  • Lead the Malt Beverage Testing lab and its operation, including; standardization of SOPs, execution of most quality lab tests, tracking of all lab orders, delivery of analytical data to clients, maintenance of equipment and facilities, leadership over student technicians, and management of inventory.

  • Initial analytical tests to be conducted by the lab manager include but are not limited to: 

    • Hops: moisture, total oil, HSI, hop acids

    • Barley: physical inspection, moisture, protein, kernel weight, germination energy, RVA, DON

    • Microbiology: aerobic and anaerobic selective media counts, spoilage detection via PCR, stability testing, yeast and bacteria identification, microscopy and cell counting

    • Beer analysis: density, extract, alcohol, carbohydrates, ash, protein, calories, total acidity, pH, color, IBUs, foam stability, Gluten (R5 Ridascreen ELISA), total polyphenols, carbohydrate sugar profile, diacetyl, carbonation.

  • For analytical tests outside of the experience of the candidate, the ability to self-instruct or to learn from faculty and staff is essential.  Alternatively, some tests may be executed in collaboration with the Chemistry Core Lab at USciences.

  • Assist in occasional outreach activities or educational opportunities for the local brewing community.

  • Support the Brewing Science program and students by supporting student education, networking, and career success.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least a Master’s degree in a relevant field OR equivalent combination of education and experience (Required).  Formal education in brewing science is advantageous.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in a brewery’s quality control lab or an analytical lab supporting the brewing industry.  Alternative Quality Control experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis (Required)

  • Understanding of brewing raw materials and processes as it pertains to beer (Required)

  • Understanding of brewing processes as it pertains to wine or spirits (advantageous)

  • Experience developing and following Standard Operating Procedures (Required)

  • Experience with ASBC approved methods for raw ingredient, wort, and beer analysis (Required)

  • Highly effective oral and communication skills (Required)

  • Highly effective interpersonal skills (Required)

  • Highly effective organizational skills for inventory tracking and lab order execution and delivery (Required)

  • TTB Certified Chemist for the analysis of beer for export is a plus.  If not certified, willingness and ability to gain certification is required.

  • Good laboratory technique including mastery of aseptic technique (Required)

  • Microbiology and PCR experience (preferred)

  • HPLC and GC-MS experience (advantageous)
