JOB TITLE:  Packaging Manager

LOCATION: Comstock Brewery

REPORTS TO: Production Manager

FLSA POSITION TYPE: Full- Time, Salaried Exempt


POSITION SUMMARY: Provides the strategic direction and management that builds and sustains a world-class, safety-always, quality-focused, high-performing and diverse packaging department.

Safety Focus

•In collaboration with Safety Department, facilitates RCA for Packaging Department OSHA recordable incidents and other identified hazards

•Maintains Safety KPIs for visibility to Production Department, Packaging Department and Line teams

Quality Focus

•Ensures that a quality focus is integral to all aspects of Packaging Department operations

•Sets objectives for Packaging Quality team and leads efforts toward continuous improvement of real time packaging quality key performance indicators

•In collaboration with the Quality Manager Leads GMP Development, Continuous Improvement and adherence for the Packaging Department, and oversees department initiatives that ensure packaging areas are organized, clean and sanitary

•In collaboration with Quality Department, facilitates RCA for Beer Lover Concerns associated with Packaging

•Oversees and is responsible for Traceability of Packaging Materials per HACCP protocols

•Periodically researches, sources and audits packaging material vendors

•Leads the Packaging Materials Specialist to ensure quality packaging materials are available to complete the packaging schedule

•Maintains Quality KPIs for visibility to Production Department, Packaging Department and Line teams

Respect Focus

•Trains and mentors Packaging Department Managers and Leaders; identifies opportunities for Professional Development for direct reports and conducts effective monthly 1:1’s and annual performance reviews with all direct reports

•Leads the Packaging Department Trainer with Packaging Shift Managers to develop and monitor training plan ensuring operator competency. Designing redundancy across all shifts and pack lines; with oversight of the development and upkeep of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

•Supports the Packaging Shift Managers with personnel issues and collaborates with Human Resources to apply policies consistently and works to improve and modify to meet Company needs

•Maintains Training and Recognition KPIs for visibility to Production Department, Packaging Department and Line teams

Responsibility Focus

•Oversees Microsoft A/X inventory accuracy and losses for packaging materials with the Packaging AX Coordinator

•Works with Production Manager to set Responsibility targets and facilitates RCA when exceeding triggers

•Maintains Responsibility KPIs to track (at a minimum) efficiency, packaging beer loss, and packaging materials loss for visibility to Production Department, Packaging Department and Line teams

•Works closely with the Brewing, Supply Chain and Maintenance Departments to facilitate operational efficiency and communication at the front line level through the Daily Shift Meeting to meet production schedules

•Supports the Maintenance Manager to ensure all equipment is running safely, at high efficiency and maintained to the highest standards

•Works in conjunction with Maintenance Manager to schedule and develop preventative maintenance routines.

•Interfaces with the Engineers to design and install new packaging equipment, as needed

•Works with a Continuous Improvement mindset and tools to build Safety, Quality, Teamwork, Visual KPI Tracking, 5S and Preventative Maintenance toward operational excellence

•Is informed about, educates on, and implements industry best practices

•Calculates and authors periodic Packaging Materials, Efficiency and Quality reports

•Conducts critical assessment of Bell’s beers through participation in beer sensory panels

•May use the company vehicle for deliveries and travel

•Assists bottling, kegging and canning shifts, occasional forklift operation, as needed.

•Flexible schedule. 24-hour, 7-day on-call status, required.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.


•Six (6) direct reports (Packaging Shift Managers, Packaging Quality Manager, Packaging Trainer and Packaging AX Coordinator).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

•Must possess a valid driver’s license

•Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable addressing diverse groups

•Strong computer skills necessary to quickly learn Bells’ software systems

•A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player

•Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple processes at one time

•Self-motivated with good time management skills

•Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable leading in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination

•An understanding of the role of sanitation in the packaging process

•The ability and aptitude to work with and troubleshoot packaging equipment


•A combination of education and/or relevant experience in Packaging, Food Science, Engineering or other relevant field

•A minimum of 5 years Management/Leadership experience, preferably at a brewery or other food production facility or military experience

•Prior significant experience as a packaging operator

•Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus

•The ability to travel to various industry events via car or airplane is required

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

•Work is primarily performed in an office environment with frequent trips to operational areas required

•The work environment is that of a brewing and packaging facility

•The employee frequently must work in a sanitary environment

•The noise level in the packaging facilities is frequently loud (90+ dB)

•The employee regularly works around high voltage, hot water, steam and flame

•The employee regularly works with pressurized vessels

•The employee comes in contact with and has to handle broken glass

•The employee handles hazardous materials

•The employee works near moving mechanical parts

•The employee works on wet floors and with wet equipment
