Cinderlands Beer Co. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seeks a passionate, diligent, detail-oriented individual to join our team as staff brewer/cellarperson/quality lead at our Cinderlands Warehouse and Cinderlands Foederhouse brewpubs. Our brewing staff is cross-trained and spends time working at both facilities on both 3.5 BBL and 15 BBL brewhouses and cellars.

The Foederhouse, an 80+ seat brewpub, has been open since December 2017 and started making mixed-fermentation foederbier this summer. The Warehouse, a 300+ seat brewpub with an automated brewhouse and canning line, opened in May 2019. The opportunity to make both clean and mixed-culture beer in dedicated facilities only a mile apart is a unique opportunity and challenge for our brewing team. Both pubs have scratch kitchens led by talented chefs who are our partners in delivering exceptional experiences to our guests. Cinderlands was named one of the best new breweries in the country in 2018 by USA Today and Hop Culture Magazine, and one of the 10 best breweries in the country in 2019 by Hop Culture Magazine.

This position is full-time (exempt) and salaried with benefits.

This is a unique position for someone passionate about beer with a scientific background to join an experienced production team and learn brewing, cellar, and packaging work on the job. The ideal candidate will have a BS in microbiology, biochemistry, or other brewery-related scientific discipline. No prior professional brewing experience is required, but a passion for and knowledge of beer and beer production through either home brewing, self-led or formal education, or professional brewing experience is required.

STAFF BREWER/CELLARPERSON/QUALITY LEAD Responsibilities include:

  • Work with head brewer to improve and systematize a comprehensive, well-documented quality program
  • Yeast cell counts and viability
  • CIP verification via ATP testing
  • Mixed culture and clean single-strain culture management
  • Microbiological stability testing via qPCR and traditional plating
  • Dissolved oxygen and total package oxygen testing, tracking, and reduction
  • Sensory training and testing
  • Cleaning and filling kegs, including transporting kegs for cleaning

  • Transporting materials between brewery locations and off-site storage

  • Starting up, operating, and cleaning an automated canning line

  • Racking beer between fermentors and brite tanks

  • Cleaning and sanitizing tanks and other brewery equipment

  • Harvesting and pitching yeast, monitoring yeast cell counts and viability

  • Dry hopping, fining, and monitoring beer in tank by sensory evaluation and measurement

  • Milling grain and producing wort

  • Working safely and efficiently

  • Maintaining safe conditions for other employees and visitors

  • Receiving and organizing shipments

  • Counting and recording inventory thoroughly and accurately

  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and orderliness in the production area

  • Following production SOPs and contributing to their ongoing development

  • Keeping accurate, timely, and legible records

  • Troubleshooting mechanical equipment to ensure safe and timely production of finished beer

  • Communicating with the head brewer to understand and fulfill responsibilities

  • Reporting safety, maintenance, or beer quality issues to supervisors

  • Representing Cinderlands Beer Co. in a positive way and avoiding behaviors and situations that are not reflective of Cinderlands' culture

  • Assignment to on- and off-site consumer-facing events outside of normal working hours, e.g. trade shows, beer dinners, and beer festivals

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Passion for beer and brewing demonstrated by professional brewing experience, homebrewing experience, or formal or self-led education

  • Ability to demonstrate repeatable, unsupported proficiency of complicated and sensitive tasks after training, practice, and feedback

  • Growth-oriented mindset with a willingness to openly communicate mistakes and gaps in knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to make intelligent decisions in difficult, rapidly evolving circumstances

  • A valid and current driver's license and ability to load, unload, and locally drive a commercial van or truck (no CDL required)

  • Ability to lift 55-pound bags above shoulder height

  • Ability to lift and carry 55-pound bags

  • Ability to climb ladders

  • Ability to push and pull 165-pound kegs along floor

  • Ability to unload 2,500-pound pallets, 50-55 pounds at a time

  • Ability to work in tight spaces with low clearance for extended periods of time

  • Ability to work in extreme hot and cold temperatures

  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and wear personal protective equipment

  • Ability to travel by car, train, and airplane

  • 21 years of age or older
