Maplewood’s design team is dedicated to producing thoughtfully-crafted work designed to complement the unique artisanal recipes our production team creates so our customer’s experience is complete. The Role

Maplewood Brewery and Distillery is looking for a Graphic Designer who is passionate about typography, composition, color, and layout. Experience in both print and electronic media a must. We seek Graphic Designers who understand the importance and nuance of typography, layout, and information hierarchy. Qualified candidates must be able to take direction from written or spoken ideas and translate them  into images, layouts, and other design formats. Candidates must love the challenge of aligning each unique design need with our established brand identity. Candidates will work with closely with our Design Lead,  as well as, our marketing team and production team to collaborate and turn ideas into beautiful, compelling designs that evolve our brand. Our design team gets our customers excited about our craft. We work in  a fast-paced but also relaxed environment.

Candidates must exhibit pieces that demonstrate their understanding of the fundamental principles of Typography: spacing (kerning, leading, tracking); the relationship between type size and line length; hierarchy and scale; alignment (ragged type, justified type); and color application. Candidates should also possess a strong grasp of design elements/principles, information structure, creative visualization, and have a strong desire to learn and grow as a designer.


+Assist the design staff in the creation of all design materials including, but not limited to: Branding,  labels, signage, iconography, photography, marketing, and sales collateral.

+Clearly articulate design decisions and share your process when appropriate.

+Connect disparate elements of a design created by another professional, such as icons, photographs  and other components necessary for any design need.

+Work in a collaborative relaxed environment interacting with entire staff. 

+Receive ideas and art direction to formulate design concepts that are engaging and attractive.

+Solve challenging design problems and present multiple concepts for consideration.


+Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or equivalent experience/training in the graphic arts. 

+At least 1 year of experience designing for print, web and/or digital design  (freelance work during school accepted as experience).

+Excellent interpersonal skills; self-directed, comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, and able to thrive in a rapidly changing environment. 

+Solid understanding of information hierarchy, proportion/composition, type/grid relationships.  (Examples of product design a plus.)

+Strong typographic skills are required. Knowledge of the discipline of Typography and its history a must. Familiarity with the work of designers like Emil Ruder, Jan Tschichold, Armin Hoffman, Wolfgang Weingart,  and Robert Bringhurst, as well as styles such as the International Typographic Style (“Swiss Style”) a plus. 

+Curiosity, resourcefulness, and a desire to solve challenging design problems. 

+Ability to work within, and refine routine processes. 

+Ability to work nights and weekends occasionally to attend or assist in hosting industry events. 

+Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Mac OS X.

+Knowledge of HTML, CSS experience a plus.

+Server-Certified Cicerone or Certified Cicerone a plus.

+Illinois Basset Certification must be completed before the start date.
